Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

It dries quickly and it smells good. Fights new pimples well

Cons:

doesn't work as well after a while...hard to find at stores so you have to buy online which is a rip off. Also the tube is small

It's a good moisturizer and fights acne at the same time. In the beginning it shrank every new pimple I got, but now it takes a while to get rid of them...but it still does the job. By the way, I just got off accutane for the second time, so maybe my skin texture changed.

Pros:

It removed a lot of dirt from my face, and left my skin feeling clean.

Cons:

My skin burned a little. The pads ripped and were very watery.

Try them! They do an OK job, but maybe you should stick with the regular cleanser.

Pros:

Easy to dispense. Foamed up well and smells pretty good (like soap.) Made my face feel clean, but not a whole lot less oily

Cons:

It worked like soap for me, cleaned dirt, but not really oil. I decided not to use it because i thought it would be better to use less products on my skin and this one wasnt doing much anyways

I wouldnt recommend it for acne. It cleaned dirt off my skin but didnt clean off any more oil then water would.

Pros:

This product works better than Murad!!!! And it smells great...

Cons:

The tube is sensitive.

This product has helped my skin clear up a lot. I used Nature's Cure for several months, but that stopped working and my breakouts were getting bad. This product was bought out of my desperation... and I am glad I bought it. Hopefully it keeps working, but right now I am happy with the results.

Pros:

It does it's job of removing acne, it smells wonderful, and makes your face feel super clean.

Cons:

It drys out your face too much. I would recommend a good moisturizer after using this product.

This product works really good and it smells great. It removed most of acne and I love the sensation when using this product. It left my face also looking younger.

Pros:

See below.

Cons:

See below.

I like it for the upper half of my face. It's nice and smooth and keeps my skin even. But below my nose and especially on my chin, I have more zits than I've ever had in my life! So, I guess I'll try something else.

Cons:

made me break out. BIG TIME.
It stung for about 10 minutes after being applied. More Redness. Felt like sandpaper.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
