Pros:

None

Cons:

Did not really do anything for my face. It did give me chronic yeast infections because it kills the good bacteria in our body.

Being on an anitbiotic for a long period of time is not good for anyone!

Pros:

It initially worked well to clear up my minor acne and reduced the redness of rosacea. It was inexpensive using my insurance ($20 copay).

Cons:

Caused TERRIBLE pains in my knees, hips, fingers, and shoulders. Lost effectiveness after 2 mos. It also made me sweat very easily and I developed a dry cough when I used it, which stopped immediately upon discontinuing the med.

I took minocin for 6 months regularly but I stopped taking the medication because of the serious joint and muscle pains it caused. I've takne other antibiotics for acne before and have never had this sort of reaction, so this was scary. Others may have positive experiences with it, but for me the joint pains and other strange side effects were not worth the moderate job it did at clearing up my acne.

Pros:

It didn't change anything for me.

Cons:

I developed a severe case of hives shortly after taking it, so I wasn't able to take it long enough to know if it would have made a difference.

It might work for some, but apparently I'm allergic. It's in the tetracycline family so if you are allergic to those products, don't take it!

Pros:

it worked great for my back and chest acne!

Cons:

it did nothing for my face

i'm sure it would work for people with very moderate acne, but it didn't work for me.

Pros:

It was very cheap and easy to take a pill once a day.

Cons:

Rash, I tried taking this medication three times and within a few days each time I got a horrible rash all over my chest.

The rash I got was not worth any small effects the medication had. I tried taking allergy medicine and it only lessened the pain from the rash. When I went to the derm they asked if I just sprayed my perfume too close. Uh no it's the medicine every time. It drove me crazy to change my detergent, watch what I ate and stop using any body products just to find that the mino was the problem.

im not so sure yet?

I've been on this for about a month. I think I have developed hives. I am itching like crazy all over my body. I have broken out in hives from other antibiotics before. Also, the acne on my face has cleared up a bit. But my back is worse than ever. I also gained almost 10 pounds in the month I have been on it. I have no idea if that is a coincidence, or related to the pills. To women, I would recommend the Yasmin birth control pill. That will be my next step. My OB put me on a low dose birth control pill, but I am going to go back to Yasmin. It made my face beautiful. I took it a few years ago.

everything

this sh*t, is sh*t! ive been taking it for 3 weeks today and its made me get cystic ACNE!!!! bullsh*t. its done nothing.

Pros:

Cleared some acne after 2 weeks.

Cons:

Horrible side effects. Back pains. Joints felt stiff and crackly. Horrible breakouts after stopping.

Clears some acne, but not nearly enough to give justification for the side effects. Break out worse than ever when you stop. Bottom line: don't ever start this medication.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
