Pros:

minor improvement over the course of 2 months, only slightly discernible

Cons:

Caused a LUPUS-type reaction in one of my daughters and the other was immediately taken off

This medication caused a verified Lupus-type systemic reaction in one of my daughters-she had a positive ANA. One morning she woke up with noticeably swollen joints and hands. I did some research and found that this is a reaction that is not commonly reported in this country. It is more prevalent in Europe where they have more commonly used this compound for acne treatment. Be careful if you use this drug for any length of time and be aware of systemic reactions.

Pros:

It really does clear up acne IF you're consistent.

Cons:

I was using it for 5 yrs and found that if you stay on it too long, you will develop a reaction. I was severely burned from minor sun exposure, and my joints became stiff (almost like severe arthritis). & when u stop using it u break out like CRAZY!

It's a temporary fix. It will clear up your skin if you're consistent, but it will make you feel sick if you don't take the pills with food (it's pretty tough on your stomach), as with all antibiotics it will cause your birth-control to not work (ladies), you will develop a reaction over time (google this stuff, there's TONS of blogs with people writing about their reactions and problems with this stuff), and it also throws your body's bacteria balance out of whack. My tongue has weird circles on it that no ones been able to correct, even after countless medications to "correct" the bacteria imbalance.

Pros:

Nothing

Cons:

Makes skin way worse.

My doctor told me that this would either work or it wouldn't but under no circumstance would it make my skin worse. I had what many would call "vanity acne," before, nothing serious. I have been on this stupid pill for almost two months now and my skin is 10x worse. ABSOLUTLY. HORRIBLE.

Pros:

none

Cons:

Serious Vertigo (dizziness). Luckily it stopped soon after I stopped taking it

I didn't notice any improvement in my skin, it just made me so dizzy and maybe even a little psychotic(?)!

Pros:

I could tell that it was doing its job in reducing my acne cysts.

Cons:

I experienced confusion and I had a very hard time focusing on topics that I normally could focus on (e.g. studying). My acne also did not just disappear. There was still noticeable acne, just less of it.

The negative side effects outweigh the slight skin improvement.

Pros:

Reduced flare-ups

Cons:

panic attacks, vomiting, nausea, tremors

Stopped After 2 months, symptoms were too severe and only had a month left of it. Double flares came in a week.

Pros:

None.

Cons:

CRANIAL PRESSURE!
I got THE worst migraines of my life for five straight days. My derm had me discontinue, and now I'm using topicals. And I'm clear!

Minocycline is good for the average person. If you are someone who is prone to side effects, or gets head aches a lot, this product is not for you. Contact your derm IMMEDIATELY if you get persistent or severe headaches.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
