Pros:

Cleared up acne within weeks

Cons:

Made lips, eyes, teeth, and gums really dark. Face lost its glow and began to look really tired.

The medication works to clear up acne but the side effects are really bad. I was supposed to take it twice a day but couldn't take the headaches, dizziness,... felt like I was a zombie. So I only took it before bed but ever since I noticed the darkness on my skin, i have stopped. Lets see if the acne comes back....

Pros:

Skin started to clear in as little as three days.

Cons:

HEAD PRESSURE! It got really bad, and I had to stop taking after six days. I was also dizzy, lightheaded, having bad nausea, and felt uncordinated. Simply drinking or eating made me feel sick.

Mino is a good pill, but I just happened to be one of those rare people who have bad side effects. If you experience ANY head aches or pressure for more than three days contact your doctor IMMEDIATELY!

Pros:

It'd cleared up my acne within months. Hardly brokeout.

Cons:

Caused severe headaches, they felt like migranes and would also get dizzy. Darken lips, nails, and the white of your eyes

One of the side effects of this medication is severe headaches which I wasn't told. After a few months of taking this medication I was getting migranes and went to the doctors 3 to 4 times and they kept telling that it was allergies and prescribe me different allergy medication, that didn't work. One day I decided to take a break from the minocyclin b/c I wanted my lips to turn back to it's original color(caused my lips to turn dark). After 3 days of being off of it I had no headaches. Right now I'm not taking minocycline, I did get a severe breakout after getting off of it. My skin has clear up since than, Right now I am just using benzoyl perioxide and a sulfur cream, and also started taking vitamins

Pros:

It did clear up my skin after prolonged use but I still get the odd pimple.

Cons:

I thought I had the flu but it was acutally the minocycline. I was vomiting and was constantly dizzy. I actually passed out a couple of times.

It works but there are bad side effects. I'd try topical remedies first if you can.

Pros:

Didn't experience any side effects

Cons:

Done absolutely nothing for my skin.

I have tried Minocycline and Doxycycline and neither one seemed to do anything for my acne. Within the past couple of months my acne has flaired up when before I had the occasional pimple. Was put on these antibiotics but nothing seems to works. Now I'm trying laser treatments which are costing me $200 a week and praying this will be my answer.

Pros:

I mostly have zits on my chin and it did clear up my acne pretty well, almost completely with maybe one or two zits every so often.

Cons:

I was taking this for about 4 months when I started to notice my joints were begining to ache and my ankles became extremely swollen.

This medication did work for my intially and I wished I was still on it. I used to take Doxy which worked great but it made so sick and I would vomitt every other weak after taking this even after a meal. After about 4 months, my fingers would cramp up and one day I woke up with my middle finger curled in and I couldn't extend it back. I had to go to the doctor to get an injection to loosen up my joints. At first the doctors thought I had rhumetiod athritis but then I finally saw a specialist who said I had drug induced lupus. I stopped taking it and within two days all my symtoms when away. The doctor said it only happens in 5 percent of people who use it, I guess I was one of the unfortunate ones. I do reccomend it because it did work but I just wanted to let people know that drug induced lupus could occur in some people while taking this.

Pros:

It seemed to get rid of white head pimples.

Cons:

At the same time it intensified the rest of the acne on my face, dried out my skin, and gave me acne on my forehead where it never was

I had mild acne and i started taking minoclcline in vanity of wanting perfect skin, for anyone who is in the same situation i would recommend to stay clear of this antibi and just realise that it could be much worse. I hope that when i stop taking it i will not have even worse acne! just do your best and live with it!

Pros:

Took Solodyn. Could take with or without food, only once a day. Wasn't on it long enough to see much difference in my acne though.

Cons:

Made me extremely tired, sick, achy, dizzy. Solodyn is very expensive if you don't have a coupon.

I was doing ok on this medication the first week. On day 7 I developed headaches and just this blah feeling. 5 days later I got aches and pains all over my body, it was hard to breathe at times, I had occasional chest pains, I felt dizzy and lightheaded, and just overall sick. One day I just collapsed in bed around 8:30 from extreme fatigue. I stopped the drug for 3 days, felt a bit better after 2 days, restarted, and felt very sick and dizzy all over again about 4 hours after I took it. This pill did not work for me. Which didn't surprise me because I had a bad reaction to doxicycline in the past (I told my derm this but she said I should be fine. NOT!) But I know it works for a lot of people. I'd recommend at least trying it to see if it works for you. But if you have reacted badly to another tetracycline drug, I'd be leery of trying this one.

Pros:

My skin has gotten very soft and I haven't really broken out since I started using it.

Cons:

My insurance paid all but $40, otherwise it would have been $500!

I had tried tetracyclene when I was a teenager and had lots of bad side effects. So far, I have only had some mild light headedness with this medicine. It has cleared up my face and back pretty quickly. Works so much better than topical Retin A that I had been on for a few months previously. I recommend trying it if your insurance will cover it.

Pros:

None yet, except that acne does not seem worse; have not had the side effects (stomach, etc)

Cons:

Food/vitamin issue

Have been taking 100 mg 2X day for almost 4 weeks, with no real change. I have a couple of questions for people who have had success: 1) is it normal to take more than a month to see results? 2) I only have a small window to take and eat School/work)--I usually take it in the morning with a breakfast bar and juice. Does this effect effectiveness? It don't get sick from it. I don't do the dairy products.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
