Pros:

It works in about 3-4 days.

Cons:

It works only for a few weeks... Then it wears off and your acne comes back.

So after I first used it for a week, I saw amazing results. All of my acne dissapeared and I didn't get any more breakouts. But then later on the effects wore off and now I have two bottles left of unused pills and a bunch of acne on my face.

Pros:

Inexpensive. Controls breakouts well. No intestinal side effects.

Cons:

Your system can become immune. side effects.

After taking it for two weeks I started feeling short of breath, I then developed symptoms of a sinus infection. I stopped taking the minocyclin and my symptoms went away. One week after I began taking it again, I started to feel short of breath again and I developed a fever of 101.3! It was the minocyclin! I stopped taking it and haven't had anymore flu-like symptoms.

Pros:

Seemed to clear rosacea breakouts

Cons:

Severe allergic reaction. Sunburn rash, swelling/itching of hands and feet, fatigue, severe joint pain, cold chills and almost delirium.

Insurance did not cover cost of drug.

I am going to assume I am allergic to drug. However, my internist disagreed due to the adverse reaction not starting until 1 week into the drug use. However, 3 weeks later I decided to give it another go and took one pill and 48 hours later am still suffering. Another cortisone dose pack starting tomorrow. Metrogel and avoiding tomatoes, and extreme heat works very well for my rosacea.

Pros:

it worked within...2 days? side effects cleared up...don't have to bother with taking it one hour before meals etc.

Cons:

made me a little nauseated for the first couple weeks i used it. if u dont' have insurance it's expensive

i have moderate acne, and this worked like a charm. Even though it hasn't yet gotten rid of the acne on my back i definatly think it's worth trying!

Pros:

for me...it prevented the deep cyst acne.

Cons:

for the medication to work effectively I had to take it twice a day. When taking the med you must avoid vitamins 2 hrs before and after, drink plenty of water, have no dairy products, and avoid the sun. it did not prevent normal everyday acne.

this med may only be good for someone who suffers from a type of acne that is deep and cystic. I combined it using the regimen and received pretty decent results. however, missing even one dose, or not taking it properly- (i.e. within not consuming two hrs of any vitamins or any dairy products- with plenty of water- isn't a very easy thing to do when you have a life)-can cause a breakout down the road as a result. i suggest trying it for a month then telling your doc/dermatologist it isn't working- get him or her to step it up with another oral anti-bacterial med.

Pros:

...

Cons:

Acne has only gotten worse.

I'm more than half way through my script and my acne has multiplied. I'm so frustrated! What antibiotic actually works? I'm 23 years old and so tired of this acne infested face!

Pros:

It seems to work well, not the best results but better than most

Cons:

I had severe allergic reaction to it. I had Minocyline enduced Lupus. It was awful, the docs thought I had Rheumatoid arthiritis, went through months of joint pain, and joint swelling before they figured it out what it was

It worked ok, but not worth the side effects

Pros:

My face started to clear up within a few days of taking it.

Cons:

A week after I started taking the medicine, I broke out in severe hives all over my body! My doctor said it the worst case of hives he has ever seen!

I was probably a rare example of the people who have awful allergic reactions. I liked the results I saw, but unfortunately, I couldn't continue to take it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
