Pros:

*Cheap for me.
*Has cleared the acne on my jaw line, chin, back, chest, and a little on my forehead.

Cons:

*No cons just yet. I work third shift, so I don't have to worry about the sensitivity to light thing. I take pill after I eat, with a full glass of water.

After a week it's working. My acne was starting to clear up anyways, but this has sped up the process. Just make sure you eat yogurt once or twice a day. Reason being, anti-biotics kill good and bad bacteria, and good bacteria helps fight bad bacteria. So, eating yogurt helps replace the good bacteria.

Pros:

I have had moderate acne for 10 years and this has clear up my skin like no other topical product could. It is good for hormonal breakouts, but you still need to use topical prescriptions as well.

Cons:

NONE

I NO LONGER NEED TO WEAR MAKEUP- THIS DRUG IS A LIFESAVER!

Pros:

Clear skin for once. I did not even need to use any special facial cleaners, or topical meds, I'd sometimes even sleep with make up on, and got absolutely no breakouts.

Cons:

I had to stop taking it as I became pregnant and the acne did return after about 1 month of not using it. So it probably is true that you need to keep taking them forever, but I seriously would not mind, its a small price to pay to have clear skin.

I am 24, have suffered from acne for at least 12 yrs. Doxycycline is the ONLY thing that cleared my skin. I tried just about EVERYTHING out there, nothing worked. I used it for a little bit over a year. I'd take one pill when I woke up and one before going to bed. The morning one did make me very nauseous 30 mins after taking it but it would go away after 30 mins too. You can eat after that as well, I think that's the reason you get nauseous. I did notice that it made my skin more oily but again I did not mind. I'd just pat it with a napkin. My brother suffers from acne too and is now using it, it is working for him as well. As soon as I have my baby I plan on getting back on it. I loved having clear skin. I'm sure that just as: proactiv, nv perricone, clearasil, neutrogena, oxy, clean & clear, tetracycline, cetaphill, avon, mary kay, clinique, chanel, epsom salts, vinegar did not work for me (or my brother) this may not work for everyone either but its sure worth the try. Good

Cons:

stomach pain

this medicine works miracles!!!

Pros:

It works!! I am in my 40s with hormonal acne, and this helped more than any topical medicine.

Cons:

I did not have any stomach problems and I don't see any cons to this medicine at all. I love it.

I don't think any topical medication without an antibiotic will clear up acne...so this is a good way to go before trying Accutane. The side effects are minimal in comparison and it's worth a try!

Pros:

Cheap, effective.

Cons:

Takes a long time to take effect.

Had moderate to severe hormonal cystic acne from 18 and on. I tried a lot of stuff and finally I got fed up with it and went to a derm. He prescribed me 100mg Doxycyline (2x day). I took it in 2-1 intervals (2 on one day, 1 the next) and washed twice a week with a benzoyl peroxide facewash to combat resistance (+cetaphil moisturizer). Didn't have much results for at least 2 months. Starting in the 3rd month, I simply do not have new acne springing up and it's been forever since I've had a breakout. Because no new acne is coming up, my scars have been able to heal at a healthy rate.

Pros:

Effective, especially when used with a topical cream of choice.

Cons:

Can cause stomach upset if not taken with food.
Takes a while to work - 7-8 weeks in my particular case.
Causes sensitivity to sun - I got sunburned after only being outside for 10 minutes.

Doxycycline works well, but slowly, against acne. I take 100mg twice a day. I have a hard time remembering to take it the same time every day because my schedule varies quite a bit, so I wish it were more convenient. However, I prefer having to remember to take pills over acne. As mentioned above, it does take a while to see a difference - after 6 weeks or so, I started to notice that some larger, more stubborn spots were fading and the newer ones were smaller and cleared up more quickly (in a few days as opposed to a few weeks). At about 7-8 weeks, this is the first time I could say I don't have a single pimple on my face. I didn't have major stomach issues. I was told to take it with food. I found that even one bite of food was sufficient to stop most stomach issues. The few times I didn't take it with food, I mostly experienced bloating and gas. I never got as sick as some other posters.

Pros:

It's the ONLY thing that has worked for my acne. I've only been on it for roughly 5 or 6 days and have seen dramatic improvement already!

Cons:

Sunburn easily while taking them.

It's fantastic. I had moderate acne on my cheeks deep in my pores. This is the only thing that has cleared up my acne this quickly! The only bad thing is that you sunburn a little easier; for example in the car on a 2 hour car ride I could feel my chest getting hot and it was pinkish/red by the end of the trip. Other than that, I have had NO problems whatsoever. I take it with food (which you are supposed to, mind you, despite that many people are being told to take it on an empty stomach), and I have had no nausea or any other side effects whatsoever! It's great!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
