Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

I took this for a reason other than acne but was happily surprised when my skin cleared up after being on it a couple of weeks! I have had acne on my back for over 20 years and this is the first time EVER it has cleared. I will continue to take it.

Cons:

If I take on an empty stomach, then I am throwing up within 15 minutes! With food I have no nausea.

LOVE THIS ANTIBIOTIC FOR ACNE!

Pros:

AMAZING. clears everything. I have literally not had a any real acne problems or cysts in 4 years.

Cons:

After 3 years I started getting a queazy stomach in the morning if I didn't take with food. Of course with every other skin regimen it takes at least a 2 month "purging" period before it gets better. Makes face sensitive to sun at first so wear spf

Worked extremely well with me. Cleared up all any back acne, chest acne or face acne I had and works awesome with deep acne. took about 5 months for it to be ALL cleared up but I have been on it for 4 years now and I don't even have to worry about zits anymore!

Pros:

Just started it. It is an antibiotic, so it should help. I'm not worried about that.

Cons:

No cons

Long-term use of any antibiotic won't work. Your body will build up defenses against it and can't work. That is why there is so much of that MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staph aureus. The body will become immune to the drug. You shouldn't be taking antibiotics for a long time. Just sporadically, until your acne clear, stop taking it and at the first sign of a breakout take another capsule. But do not take it everyday forever....that's not how antibiotics work. If some of you have been taking antibiotics daily for months, no wonder it isn't working anymore. Your body has built up a resistance to it.

Pros:

Made my acne on my chin go away

Cons:

I get nauseous if I took it and waited too long to eat something. Also, my hands and arms have been very tingly. My skin was also sensitive to the sun

I would use this to get rid of acne. I have used other antibiotics that havent worked as well as this one. I'm very stressed with school right now, and it is keeping my acne away

Pros:

After 11 years (now 21 years old) i'm finally acne free, i had medium/severe acne on my back and neck, now it's gone. And I can say I tried so many things (diets, clothing, sporting, washing) but nothing helped! Only doxycyclyne does.

Cons:

I do not know if I am acne free now, because I still use it. But what if I stop my cure? Will it come back? I dont know, so i keep using it.

Its the only thing for me that helped, and I tried many things. KEEP USING IT for 5 months! I started my cure in november, I was acne free end of March. In Jan/Feb I felt sad that it didnt help, but I kept using it and finally in March I was free. So BE PATIENT. And by the way I had no side effects from the sun or what so ever. Its THE cure, further you need nothing. I tried other cleansers, gels, scrubs etc etc.... nothing helps, only doxy. Good luck.

Pros:

Works well assuming the medication is taken daily as indicated on the label. Acne inflammation/irritation substantially decreases throughout the course of 2-3 days since beginning of treatment. Noticeably clearer semi-acne free skin with in 5-8 days.

Cons:

As this medication causes mild nausea and upset stomach (when taken on an empty stomach) taking it with a modest meal is highly recommended. Should be taken with a modest meal crackers or bread to avoid the possibility of upset stomach or vomiting.

This acne treatment has strongly improved my moderately severe acne and helped keep it in control. Also this medication should be taken in the morning to mid day following a non-calcium, dairy or iron rich snack for best absorption results, and sunscreen must be used when exposing skin to direct or artificial sunlight as this medication causes thinning of the skin and will cause irritation or burning of the skin. Lastly taken before bed may cause esophagus/trachea irritation and should be avoided. Overall when taken properly and with the correct steps in mind this medication is excellent in the treatment of acne.

Pros:

I haven't used it for long to state any pros, but I have to stay it doesn't cause skin irritation like some products do.

Cons:

causes severe skin peeling. It hasn't worked it's magic fast for me.

I have been using this product now for 5 days now and when I use it there is a slight itching and my skin starts to compress and there is a severe skin peeling. As for helping my acne, my mom keeps saying it is improving but I can hardly say anything. Still I haven't used to long to say it works well or not. I read that you need to use it for at least 2 weeks to see slight improvement and 12 weeks for full effect. I haven't had any stomach upsetting problems. I keep taking it in the morning with my breakfast and I also use the Gel (peroxide). I also eat a bit of yogurt every day (eat yogurt and it will help your stomach). Your stomach keeps getting upset because the antibiotic kills all the good and bad bacteria and the yogurt will provide the bacteria for your stomach again. Also take bottle of Acidophilus 250 mg along with your antibiotic because it will keep the bacteria in your stomach balanced and prevent infection. You don't want all the bacteria in your body gone, you need balan

Pros:

I'm over 30. I've had acne all my life. This antibiotic worked almost instantly. Started 10 days ago, and have not had a single outbreak since 7 days ago. Unbelievable.

Cons:

Tend to get sunburned easily. A bit of stomach discomfort at first.

Personally, it's a wonder drug. Obviously, it won't work as well for everybody, but it's really worth asking your doctor for a prescription. I think you want at least 100mg per day dosage for avg size person with light to moderate acne. I've tried over-the-counter meds and creams, as well as prescription creams...none of that worked for me.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
