Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne..reduced redness and skin looks alot smoother

Cons:

without food it upsets the stomach and very sensitive to the sun so make sure u use some kind of sunblock!

Been using Retin_A for 11 yrs and oral medication Doxy for 2 months now and my skin is 100% clear, havent had a break out in 3 weeks. My skin looks smooth and the redness is no longer there. I had cystic acne and now i have no acne so i definitly would recommend this medication :-)

Pros:

Clears skin.

Cons:

Takes about 6 weeks to work.
Nausea if taken on empty stomach.
Can cause esophageal burns if not taken with enough water.

Make sure you take it with a full glass of water. It works well and doesn't make your skin peel like topical creams.

Pros:

I noticed improvement within 4 - 5 days of starting it. I am prescribed 150mg two times a day.

Cons:

sunburn at 8.30 in the morning and outside for 5 mins, I learned quickly to use factor 50+ I also get prickly itchy feeling for about 10 mins after taking it.

It works, I've been on it for over 6 months now, and I have found if I stop using I break out big time within 2 - 3 days. Then it takes a further 4 - 5 days to clear it back up again. I still get some very mild break outs while on it, but nothing like before. I was suffering from cystic acne before. I'm just hoping I can drop it all together eventually.

Pros:

Easy to take, cheap with insurance, complexion is clear :)

Cons:

can get nauseous if you don't take it with food but I always do.

I get light to moderate acne most of the time but sometimes it can get severe depending on my stress level. I tried microdermabrasion for a year and it worked really well but I had to get it done regularly and if I missed one appointment, they would be back again. I was using glymed's supplies, 5% benzyl peroxide, and toner which had salycylic acid. It was just getting too expensive and I was tired of going to it regularly so I went to see my dermatologist who asked me to take 2 100mg tablets twice a day and I have been taking these for over 2 months now and my complexion is almost clear. I still get one or two but for the most part it is clear and after 2 1/2 years i'm finally happy. I was sick of applying all that stuff to my face every morning and night and I had dryness sometimes! My dermatologist also gave me the dual topical treatment with clindamyacin and benzyl peroxide but I used it only in the beginning. I hope I won't have to take this medication for too long...

Pros:

Cleared up acne within one week, no new breakouts!

Cons:

Sun sensitivity

My acne wasn't really bad but this cleared it up within one week of starting the medication. I haven't had one new breakout since I started taking it. I have noticed that it makes me more sun sensitive so I just make sure to wear sunscreen, no big deal. Other people have talked about nausea but I haven't had any of that, even at a 150mg dose. But overall, I would definitely give this a try it has worked wonders for me!

Pros:

Cleared up my acne (100mg 1 once a day) with no side effects.

Cons:

none so far

Get the 100mg for 14 days and just keep refilling it because then your pharmacy will give it to you for free!

Pros:

the only solution to my acne that has ever even remotely worked.

Cons:

being on an antibiotic semipermanantly

when i first started taking this about 3 years ago, it did upset my stomach. i soon realized that not taking it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach was a good idea. i recently decided to stop taking it because i do not want to permanently be on an antibiotic (and i'm 28! i thought maybe my skin would naturally be improved by this point). 2 weeks later, my face actually hurts from the acne. i now remember why i love doxycycline so much. highly recommended. i am back on it as of today.
July 9, 2009

Pros:

It works well and i havent seemed to get a zit since ive been using it and for a little i was going through a stage where i was getting a zit a day. Here's my combo for treating my acne. 1. take a doxycycline. 2.moisturize. 3. benzoyl peroxide.5.slee

Cons:

uhhm people say you ge stomach ache's, but i havent really had any.

i would get it persribed to you by your doctor or derm. it seems to be working for me so far, not right a away this is my second day so obviously not right away especially since i use benzoyl peroxide, it dries up my skin, but the pharmacist says it takes 7-10 days to work and i have a 3 month supply, so imma be taking it until my forehead acne goes away its the worst in my opinion because i hate those little bumps on my forhead and is noticeable. so for all my forhead acne getters hang in there im 16 and just experiencing and its changing my life, i really dont want to do anything out dorrs anymore. have hope, drink a lot of water and take doxycycline i guess is my advice.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
