Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

cheap

Cons:

After 1 day of taking this antibiotic, I started to get a mild rash all over my body. Not horrible itchy, but lots of little tiny bumps. Plus a more flaky, itchy kind of rash on the tip of my nose (why?)

Not sure why, but my skin reacted poorly to this antibiotic, gave me lots of little bumps all over my body.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Upsets your stomach no matter what you eat or when you take the pill. Seemed to have the adverse effect with me and actually turned my mild-moderate acne to a full flair up that took Retin-A to zap up.

I was prescribed this by my dermatologist and why I dont know. I explained to her that I have sensitivity to antibiotics. This product made me sooooooo sick. I could not even eat because I was so naseated. The product caused more acne for me and now I have more scars from the breakouts this caused to prove it.

Pros:

It seemed to work in the first couple weeks. Clearing up my forehead and that's about it.

Cons:

If you eat you have to wait an hour after eating, then take the pill.Made parts of my face extremely dry and red.

The only good thing about this product was not having to take it.

Pros:

none

Cons:

made me throw up if i didnt eat with it. after 3weeks the side effects set in currently i stopped taking it in hopes these side effects go away for the past two days i've felt absolutely exhausted and have started to black out and throw up

horrible product didnt work at all is making me very sick and its quite scary i went to go to the bathroom and i began to black out couldnt see anything and began stumbling. i couldnt get out of bed for two days i was so exhausted. I have yet to get better. funny thing is they use the same anti-biotic to treat anthrax exposure and pneumonia so it is a very strong anti-biotic.

Pros:

Gets rid of big pimples...

Cons:

Does not clear up acne....only the bigger pimples....Using an antibiotic pill may make your immune system weak. ( Your imune system may rely on the antibiotic to attack dangerous viruses, instead of attacking them itself.)

I have used this stuff in a 100mg dosage every single night for many years. It DOES NOT work.I have used it for almost a decade. My acne has not improved. My face was never clear since the day I turned 12. (I am now 20) I tried out 2 grams of Pantothenic Acid (B5) per day. And It worked...

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
