Pros:

Works AMAZINGLY well to clear up my acne.

Cons:

Ate away at the lining of my stomach and almost caused me to have a hole in my stomach-- I was sick for months and in severe pain-- Now have to take new meds for 3 months to get my stomach mostly healed-- there may be long term effects.

I would never ever ever ever use this drug or tell someone to use it. It's great for clearing up acne, but NOT WORTH IT for the amount f pain I was in. I couldn't eat anything for weeks at a time, I threw up anything I ate, my stomach burned constantly, I had to put my entire social life on pause for 1 and a half months. I went to the hospital and the idiots there didn't do enough tests-- my doctor finally diagnosed it and determined what was wrong and got my on the right path. I have to take meds for 3 months, and I'm mentally scarred from the amount of sheer pain I was in. Don't take this drug.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Nausea, thirsty, not effective

I have used this medication for three weeks and my acne has not improved at all. The only change I have seen while taking this medication is that it makes me nauseated. Besides the nausea, I have had to change my eating habits in order to take it. Basically, it has not been effective for me.

September 24, 2008

Pros:

Noticed after 6 weeks of taking medication that acne is almost gone

Cons:

Very bad side effects, tingling fingers when they get wet, nausea, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, shortness of breath.

If you can stand the side effects I guess it's worth taking, however, it may take at least a month or so before you see any improvements.

Pros:

Relatively cheap

Cons:

Kills your stomach, explicit instructions to take on an empty stomach, little to no effects after 4 weeks

I never had breakouts until my early 20's, and even then, they were mild. I was put on Differin, and then Doryx after no results. It's been a month now and the acne has not cleared up one bit, maybe even gotten worse. Checked in with the doctor bc I was concerned and she was just as boggled, yet just upped my intake to twice a day. Very confused since I had mild acne to start with and these prescription drugs are not helping. Been on Differin for 7 weeks now, as well. May check with a new dermatologist in Atlanta.

acne has actually got a lot worse, sore cysts especially on chin

Going back to see dermatologist to try something else

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
