Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

None so far....

Cons:

After 6 days of taking it, I woke up with lots lf little spots all over my chest. Never had any there before!

I have had a weird spotty rash on one cheek only for 3 months. Doc has prescribed this (1 tab of 100mg a day for 2 months), but after one week I have not noticed a difference and in fact now have lots of little spots all over my chest, which I have never had before. Feel fed up and hope it will work soon :O(

Pros:

None for acne. I wasn't even put on it for acne. I've been on it 5 weeks and hasn't helped the infection.

Cons:

I went from mild acne to BAD! Kills my stomach.

I take brand name Doryx 150 mg 1x a day. This sucks for me. I'm sure it's great for some people. I have never had acne so bad in ten years since I took accutane. I didn't even start taking it for acne, and it got so bad that I went online to look up side effects and was shocked to find out it's supposeed to make mine better! Ridiculous! It looks like every single little last pore on my face is plugged. Now every little pore on my chest is plugged and has a little red bump. Npw I havve to wash 2x a day with neutrogena oil free acne wash and put 2.5 benzoyl peroxide cream on 2x a day everywhere and that barely keeps it under control. I am 31 and look like a teenager. I can't wait to get off it.

Very Pricey!! Even with discount card that came with it. I have been on this for a week and am stopping it. It makes me dizzy, sick to my stomach, and i get a case of the sweats. Another reason-more personal-I don't like taking Antibiotics

If you fell comfy with taking Antiboitics, try this and hopefully it works for you, but I must worn you, google it first and read what it is really for. Then decide. It will dry out your skin within days of starting. Start with a low dose then if need, work up. Its geared more for serve acne vs mild, moderate.

Pros:

none

Cons:

Caused severe acne on my face.

I was prescribed this med for a problem with my eyelid. The doxy cleared up my eye irritation but has caused tonnes of acne on my face. My forehead and cheeks are covered in small pimples and it is driving me mad. I was very surprised to read on this site that this medication is prescribed for clearing up acne. And my eye irritation has since returned. I have been on this for 6 weeks and do not wish to continue.

Pros:

That it is cheap with insurance

Cons:

I tried it for awhile, it made me nauseus & it didn't work. I don't like the fact that it causes more harm then it does benefit.

Sucks...

Pros:

seems to help a little but very slowly and not really worth it.

Cons:

doesn't really help. counteracts if you take certain vitamins around the same time so you have to really space it out.

doesn't really help at all. you're better of using topical medication like benzoyl peroxide and retin-a. try the B5 regimen instead. that works better than this ever did.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
