Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

Somewhat.. kind of.. effective
Moisturizing
Did not cause a major catastrophe or make me cry myself to sleep, except for every other night when the creamy texture caused it to inevitably seep into my eyes.. Otherwise A+ for that

Cons:

I bought this because Neutrogena Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment seems to have been discontinued. What a surprise, this new product isn't anywhere near as effective. The discontinued product dramatically cleared my skin, but then I had to start using this, which kept it somewhat/mostly clear with a few breakouts. It's also white and creamy (not clear) and feels quite greasy (I have very dry skin and eczema by the way, so good luck using this if you have oily skin).

This product has a high pH and 1% salicylic acid. If you're looking for an effective BHA, this isn't it. It's about $10 for one ounce. Why would anyone want such a small size of a salicylic acid product anyway? I have so many questions for Neutrogena. You had one job. I literally went through an entire tube every week, so I was constantly running out of it. I ordered Paula's Choice 2% BHA gel and am much happier that it is now undoing the minor mess caused by using a product that barely works.

Pros:

Cheap

Cons:

Didn't do anything for my acne
Seemed to be more of an outbreak than there was before

I used this to help stop my pimples from forming, but instead I got an outbreak in the parts that I wasn't applying this to. My acne looks significantly worse than it did before I used this product.

Pros:

Leaves skin feeling soft and clean
Helps clear redness
Evens skintone

Cons:

A little bit drying
Broke me out

I have a love-hate relationship with this cleanser. I had a lot of redness on my cheeks and this cleanser has almost completely calmed it down. I love the slight cooling effect and love the feeling of my skin after I use it. I feel that it has actually improved the texture of my skin! However, after 2 days of using this my skin broke out, the areas on my face(sides of my nose, chin and forehead) which often get acne got worse (small pimples which went away after a day or two but I got more than usual). I would reccomend it for people who have little acne or who just want to reduce redness.

Pros:

-It reduced the size of my pimples and got rid a FEW of my whiteheads.

Cons:

-Burned my skin as f--k.
-Rashes on my skin.
-No good for sensitive skin.
-Only use this as a spot treatment, don't spread it in your whole face (my mistake..)

I gave this product a tried because i had whiteheads all over my cheeks and were under the surface of my skin. So I bought this and spread the cream (which you are not suppose to do) on my acne areas at night and literally in the morning, I felt my skin more tight, VERY red (LITERALLY), and burning, of course. It was awful. I do not reccomend this for sensitive skin.

Pros:

-Smells Pretty Good
-Nice Moisturizer
-Cheap

Cons:

-Doesn't Clear Scars Much..

This product is so so..I mean it doesn't clear the scars like they say it will but it is a good moisturizer thats about it. It feels a tad greasy sometimes though..

Pros:

-shrinks acne
-clean feeling

Cons:

-acne is still there
-acne scars are still there

I have been using it for about a week now and my acne has not cleared up at all; however, my pores have shrunken.

Pros:

Works well.
Kind of a clean feeling after.
Smell isn't overwhelming.
Good price for quantity.

Cons:

Stings for a few seconds after put on.
Need to moisturize after using.

I have combination skin with bumps on my chin, nose, and forehead. I take 1 pad of this product after a shower and swipe it on those areas of my face. It does sting, but it goes away after awhile and it kind of makes you feel like it's working. It didn't completely eliminate my acne, after using for a year. I still have small bumps, but I can tell this product keeps my acne at bay. In short, it is a nice product. Moisturize afterwards, it's a teeny bit strong and flaky for skin.

Pros:

It smells good
it seem to clear SOME breakouts

Cons:

makes your face dry
causes more breakouts

UI've been using this product for a little over a week and i've seen no improvement. My breakouts were around my cheeks and forehead but it wasn't too severe but enough for me to take action. This product has dried my face and I consatantly have to moisturuze. I've also noticed that im getting tiny break out on my forehead and some redness. I believe this product might help severe acne or for oily skin but it's not for me. If you have light breakouts your better off geting a regular facewash , it's not worth the outcome and the money.
March 23, 2012

Pros:

Did not dry face to much.

Cons:

Made my face feel dirty and oily.
Did nothing to help my skin what so ever.
Made me start breaking out after the first.
Is one of the worst products I have ever bought, right after proactiv.
Definitley would never reccomend this product to anyone.
This product in two days made me break out with 7 pimples.

Made my face break out with over 7 pimples in two days. I just bought the clean and clear advantage control kit and within one hour of its use my face already began to look better, howver it's a bit pricey. usually neutrogena products work really well, except for this one! However, the grapefruit products from neutrogena work great! Bottom line is DO NOT TRY THIS PRODUCT!

Pros:

Helps to keep pores.Decreases acne Because it exfoliates due to the beads it contains, it did help with preventing clogged pores after getting eyebrows waxed.

Cons:

Can leave skin dry. Does not help with texure of skin.

This product is helpful for exfoliating the skin to prevent clogged pores but can be drying.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
