Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

None

Cons:

It made my skin peel and made my pimple worse!!!! :( :( :(

Okay, this product is horrible!!!! The scent is strong and powerful. It dries your skin out and makes it peel. It doesn't do ANYTHING for your pimples, it only makes them works. Plus.... it does not work in 8 hours.

Pros:

clears up acne fast when first using it

Cons:

dries out skin

It did an amazing job of clearing up my acne within the first three days like it said, but I've used it for a long time, and so now I get occasional breakouts, but it has done a decent job of keeping my face clear and reducing the size of my pores

Pros:

I love it! I have been using it for a week and my skin is now perfect! no blemishes at all :)

Cons:

it started to dry me out but instead of applying tons of moisturizer i bout the soft steam shower clean and clear stuff, i use it instead of the cleanser about 3 times a week. My skin feels and looks amazing.

Get it its great as long as you find a way to moisturize.

Pros:

great spot treatment

Cons:

can make skin dry and peely if you use too much, stings

use moderately on pimples, not all over you know its working when it stings, but i kinda like that cause you know your doin somethin

Pros:

It has exfoliating beads which make skin soft
Very affordable

Cons:

Made my acne MUCH worse - not effective!

I tried to add this to my skin care routine because I have recently moved and my skin has gotten worse since moving! I thought that the beads would help with my more severe acne but it has only made it worse!!! I have never had this bad acne, little clusters of BIG pimples and zits have broken out on my cheeks where I usually don't get any spots at all. Also there are some smaller red bumps that I've never gotten before. May work for oily skin with VERY mild acne but otherwise, no!

Pros:

Kind of cleared up my breakout

Cons:

A week later I still have bright red marks in the area it was applied. Spots are still tender, almost feel burned.

Would NOT recommend.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
