Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

I really like the smell! The first day it made my skin really red. But it helped a lot! Even on the bigger bumps. Its been about a week and I haven't got any new pimples.

Cons:

Besides the initial burning and mild dryness I dont have anything else to say.

Works really fast.

Pros:

not many

Cons:

didn't work.

This stuff is like anything else. It doesn't do anything! BUT... i have found something that works amazingly well! LEMON JUICE! I kid you not, it is the miracle cure. I squeeze the juice from a fresh cut lemon (not bottled juice) and apply it to my back, face, and chest in the morning and at night. It cleared my back acne OVER NIGHT! I was astounded. Try it!! You have nothing to lose! It may take a few days, but its only like 75 cents for a lemon right?

Pros:

Smells good, works fast, noticeable results quick

Cons:

The Benzoyl Peroxide was a bit strong the first few times I used it

I dont have bad acne, I guess I have moderate. I'm 28 and thought it was a phase I was going through when I was younger but here I am, still with pimples. I tried Pro Activ and Murad prior to this. Pro Activ gave me what looked like sunburn all over my face and my eyes swelled up. Murad was by far the worst, my face broke out so bad, make up couldnt cover the zits. I bought Clean & Clear at Walmart for $17.70 and let me tell you, it was the best $18 I could have spent. My face was noticeably clearer the first day I used it. The Benzoyl Peroxide was strong and my face started turning red, so I used it only once a day until my face adjusted and now am back at twice a day. I love this product and my skin looks amazing, it's worth a try, even if it doesnt work, it's only $20!

Pros:

It's great and i just love it.The exfoliating gel leaves my skin tingly and clean and helps remove black heads. also, i love the tone my skin enjoys thanks to the moisturizer. My pores have visibly reduced and so have my pimples.

Cons:

I CAN'T FIND THE EXFOLIATING GEL ANYWHERE!!! The product is so scarce and i wonder why that is so since it's obviously such a hit.

I'd rely on my 3 step Pure Zone program anytime and any day.

Pros:

Does not dry out the skin surrounding blemishes, helps soothe really irritated skin, smells much better than other types of treatments.

Cons:

Needs mulitple applications daily to be most effective, leaves oily skin really shiny- especially in warmer weather.

A decent treatment, but most effective when paired with the scrub from the same line.

Pros:

none

Cons:

It didnt work, I have used it for 8 weeks plus and it has not made my acne better. If anything, It has made it worse and my acne is in area where it was not before. Like my jaw line and around my mouth. This product was a horrible mistake.

It didnt work. I mean there is so much more out there and this made my acne worse. Didnt help in any aspect at all.

Pros:

Definitely smells good.

Cons:

Takes a long time.

It takes a long time because the acne system is fighting the causes of your blemishes i.e. oil and bacteria. Be patient. My daughter has a few blemishes on her forehead but below the temples, she has beautiful skin. My other daughter has beautiful skin above the temples, but below, has blemishes along the jaw line. It's not like they wake up asking for a few more pimples. They have been consistent and I hope to see their blemishes cleared in about 45 days.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
