Pros:

Working so far, but Im also using Tazorac cream. My skin is better, night and day. I've been on the pills and cream for 3+ months. My doctor said that it takes anywhere from 3-6 months for it to work.

Cons:

I dont want to stay on it for good, so along with my other health measures, Im hoping that this will kill the bacteria while i replenish my system.

Take this, it works. However, like any antibiotic you MUST, i repeat MUST take a probiotic daily with it. Our bodies NEED good bacteria for proper bodily function or the symptoms listed on this site or on any other medication can occur. Taking a probioic will help your body remain balanced and decrease your chances of a) symptoms b) having to permanently stay on this antibiotic. Good luck to all, Acne is a terrible thing, but remember, to always fight the problem using natural ways before you try harsh drugs. If you need a boost, take drugs, but in the meantime ensure that you are eating well, exercising and taking in GOOD BACTERIA.

Pros:

did clear up my acne, while I was on it.

Cons:

gave me horrible systemic joint and muscle pain, taking over my life, forcing me to become chronically in pain, and to stop running, yoga, even walking without a limp. Gave me physically swollen and red finger joints, but affected all life activities

I would not recommend this drug. I had to go to a rheumatologist, have numerous blood work, had a sudden onset of these mm and joint pains, was a completely different person. I had always been pain free, healthy and active, and became unactive, depressed, and not well. I had elevated ESR rates (erythrocyte sedimentation rates), anemia, and doctors suspected autoimmune, but my RA tests were negative. After 4 months of horrible pain and limitation (had to use momentum to get up from sitting, and cried every day from pain and depression, had to have boyfriend help me put my socks on, could not get into/out of tub alone, mm weakness and pain, scalp pain, foot pain, elbows knees etc), I went on a low dose course of prednisone, which immediately got rid of all of my symptoms. Blood work was significantly improved after this, and now I do not have any more pain. Back to running, Bikrams, my pre-minocyclin life! Important to note: I did a very stupid thing and took my friend's prescription

Pros:

Worked as prescribed; relatively affordable

Cons:

Upset stomach, dizziness/light-headedness, decline in ability to focus/maintain concentration, chronic fatigue, dryness and redding of eyes, 2wice daily w/out food for hrs

Began using it in Dec of '07 and by the end of Dec began to see significant improvement in skin tone along w/a noticeable reduction in oil and redness. However that's when the symptoms really began to "kick-in". Stopped taking the medication after a month of continuous use and noticed the side effects disappear completely. Have continued to use medication once per day (using med. at night makes it easier to sleep off side effects experienced when taking med. during the day) every other night and have yet to experience any breakouts. However, have noticed slight increase in oil but that is much more tolerable than the acne.

Pros:

I have been prescribed a brand of minocycline called Solodyn. My doctor said that it is kind of new. I have only been using it for a few days now, but it seems to work a lot better than any other oral pill anti-biotic that I have ever used.

Cons:

none so far

So far so good. No upset stomach and I only have to take it once per day. My skin cleared up very quickly in a few days. Like I have said, Solodyn is the best oral pill anti-biotic that I have used, but I have never used Accutane. Good luck to all you acne sufferers. Never give up, keep fighting your acne. Don't let it take over your life.

Pros:

Working very well for about 1 year now. After ACNE for 20 years I went to dermatologist. He put me on Minocyline (100mg once per day) and Duac(BP and clindamycin topical) apply as needed...which I use every night

Cons:

I am having some joint and muscle pain that could be related to the drug. Well worth it at this point.

This is the first relief I have gotten my whole life. I am considering trying to reduce the dose now. My Doctor suggested I start by skipping one day a week. We'll see.

Pros:

It really does clear up acne IF you're consistent.

Cons:

I was using it for 5 yrs and found that if you stay on it too long, you will develop a reaction. I was severely burned from minor sun exposure, and my joints became stiff (almost like severe arthritis). & when u stop using it u break out like CRAZY!

It's a temporary fix. It will clear up your skin if you're consistent, but it will make you feel sick if you don't take the pills with food (it's pretty tough on your stomach), as with all antibiotics it will cause your birth-control to not work (ladies), you will develop a reaction over time (google this stuff, there's TONS of blogs with people writing about their reactions and problems with this stuff), and it also throws your body's bacteria balance out of whack. My tongue has weird circles on it that no ones been able to correct, even after countless medications to "correct" the bacteria imbalance.

Pros:

Taking pills is easier than putting on a cream

Cons:

Didn't see any acne improvement, made me incredibly dizzy and light headed, also made my neck muscles spasm randomly. Symptoms stopped a day or two after I stopped taking it.

I didn't see any difference in my acne while on this medicine, so I can't give it a good review. It made me super dizzy such that driving and working was disorienting.

Pros:

Works for a while

Cons:

Got sick of taking it twice a day...and ended up skipping times that I had to take it.

It works, made me confident in my skin but didn't really clear up my back or chest. And this pill totally made my acne worse. In the end I am definetly dissapointed. If only I can take it once a day and have my acne cleared.
January 2, 2008

Pros:

clears skin everywhere

Cons:

only for a few months

I used minocycline a few years ago and it worked great for me. i hate using creams so the pill took away all of my acne (even my back and chest) but after five months it stopped working. its a great drug to use and you start seeing results in less than a week but once it stops working, all related pills stop working. because it is an anti-biotic your immune system will get used to it and it will eventually stop working along with all other anti biotics (for acne). ive tried three different pills afterwards and none of them worked so now i have to start on accutane. anti biotics like these also dont work if you have taken alot of anti biotics as a child. so if you want a quick fix minocycline is great for a few months but good luck trying to find something to replace it after it stops working.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
