Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Prevents skin from new breakouts
works almost inmediately

Cons:

Terrible side effects at the begining (dizziness, headache, blurred vision)
but after a couple of weeks they all disappear (at least in my particular case)

It works against acne but does not clear up the previous scars so you'll probably have to use a cream for the scars

Pros:

clears my rosacea acne

Cons:

taking it every day!
Acne usually gets worse before it gets better because it is working from the inside out.

Stick with it as your acne will get worse first. I don't like the idea of staying on an antibiotic but it is the only thing that works for me.

Pros:

-Cleared up my acne almost immediately, im talking I could see a major difference the next morning.
-Easy to use, just a simple pill.
-Prevented future breakouts.

Cons:

- Dizzyness, Blurred Vision.
- I had a weird expirence read the "bottom line" below.

Ok, I am currently 17 years old and a junior in high school. Mid freshmen year is when I started to get moderate acne mostly around my chin and somewhat on my jawline. I used to use creams that didn't work so well so I decided to go to my dermatologist. I originally wanted accutane prescribed to me but they wouldn't give it to me, they wanted me to use minocycline first. I used 100mg(twice a day) for about 3 weeks and basically had no complaints at all. All the sudden, one day I was at a party with my friends after taking one of these pills and felt TERRIBLE. I had to have my friend drive me home and tell my parents my symptoms. Like I was completely MISERABLE. I had to stay in the next two-three days with a SEVERE HEADACHE, blurred vision(that I am still recovering from and it has been two weeks since I took my last pill, and an on and off rapid heartbeat. I just in general did not feel like myself at all, it was terrible. I have also noticed many other people say they now suffer from depression after using this pill. Thankfully now I have found a routine with creams that has successfully stopped my skin from breaking out. The first few weeks on this I was very happy but this does have some very bad long term side effects which is definitely not worth using. Overall, do I recommend this, NO. It worked like a charm for me until I had those terrible random side effects. P.S Don't worry your acne will eventually go away.

Pros:

Easy to take
Worked for the fist 2 weeks

Cons:

Didn't help my acne
Dried out my skin (which I expected)
Sun sensitivity
Just made my acne worse
You have to take it at the same time everyday and no food for 30 minutes or after
SIDE EFFECTS- discharge, headaches, swollen joints

I was expecting minocycline to help my acne since it was a pill which I thought would clear up my skin. It didn't really help my skin at all. It only worked for the fist 2 weeks and then my acne came back and it was almost worse than before. In 30 days I will start accutane

Pros:

-stops almost all new acne from forming
-no more acne since starting it
-no side effects for me, idk if im lucky or just normal

Cons:

-I will eventually have to come off it
-Pain in the A** taking it without having food in my body for awhile

Drink LOTS of WATER while on this pill and you will likely see no side effects. I've been on it for about 2 weeks now, maybe 1 1/2 but its kept me clear for now. I have maybe 2-3 bit zits a week on average so i guess its pretty good. Note: i drink at least 64 oz. of water a day, Bottom line, Drink lots of water when you take it and during the day and you should see no side effects.

Pros:

Stops acne forming only for a short while even if you eat a lot of fried stuff.

Cons:

It didn't completely clear my skin, just basically didn't do much.

The results are different for everybody. And it didn't help me.

Pros:

This medication drastically reduced my acne for the most part.

Cons:

As soon as you stop using Solodyn you break out like crazy. Also I experienced vertigo that was really bad at about the 6 month mark and minor liver problems.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Seriously find a topical that works for you, this stuff can be dangerous. I can't take it anymore because of the liver problems and severe vertigo I had.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
