Pros:

I used this product for 9 months. During these 9 months, I had great results. It stopped the formation of new whiteheads, and it reduced the size of cysts and blackheads by 70%.

Cons:

HOWEVER!!!! 3 months after stopping this medication; my face was worse than ever. Even worse than I started! I also experienced severe dryness of the lips and my face was all scaly during the course of the 9 months of taking this medicine.

You will experience great results; but if you stop taking it, your acne will return! It took me 1 month to prepare myself to stop taking it. I would eat 1 cup of yogurt, take selenium, would take my pill every other day for the last 2 weeks. I would not recommend this medication at all. It may heal symptoms of acne, BUT IT WILL NOT CURE ACNE!

Pros:

Started clearing up spots

Cons:

Broke out in itchy hives everywhere, Felt dizzy a lot

My doctor prescribed 100mg of Minocycline to me and I took them along with doing Dan's regimen. I started seeing results within the first two weeks. My skin was getting less redder and scars were starting to look less horrible. However, by the fourth week I noticed I started getting itchy hives/spots all over my body. It turned out I was allergic to the medicine so I have seen my doctor and stopped taking it since then. Although I will say, that you should give it a shot if you're not allergic since it seemed to be working pretty well. Too bad I am allergic to it though. Oh, and also, you do feel pretty dizzy every now and then will taking Minocycline.

Pros:

Clears acne FAST and stays clear temporarily. No side effects

Cons:

Can't take medication 1 hour before or after eating.

Here were my results: 2 Days: All inflamed pimples went down. 1 week: Significant decrease in redness of pimples 1 month: Clear skin, fading red marks 3 months - 7 months: Clear skin 7 months - 9 months: occasional minor break outs 9 months - 12 months: acne is back same as before medication was taken. This is an effective temporary medication for acne. It clears you up very well, but your body becomes immune to the drug and your skin will relapse and break out. I would suggest using minocycline for a month, then start Tazorac while continuing with the minocycline. Tazorac is a much more permanent medication for the treatment of acne. Good luck

Pros:

I used this in college for two months and it cleared up my mild acne beautifully.

Cons:

I've gone back to minocycline after getting moderate to severe breakouts after pregnancy. This is month two and I'm not seeing the same results as I did a few years ago. Side effects include headaches and yeast infection

I tried doxycycline without any positive results so I'm back on the minocycline. I'm eager for it to work so I have been consistent but the side effects are a real deterent. I'm also using this product along with BP gel and it has been really helpful.

Pros:

Cleared up acne great on face and body, reduced redness of acne,

Cons:

Was clear for about 3 months but then acne came back 100x worse than i've ever had before.

I took 50 mg twice a day and after about 6 weeks i started seeing results. After 3 months my face was really clear but then it stopped working and now i have SEVERE acne when i only started out with mild acne. I recently stopped minocycline completely and am going on accutane. Be careful with taking this antibiotic. There are some food restrictions and your acne might come back much worse than before!

Pros:

It works for my rash that I have and clears it up, but you have to take every drop.

Cons:

It makes me extremely sick. It makes my head hurt and my arms numb, it caused me to have a cat scan because i thought it was migranes and come to find out it was this medicine. It really makes me sick and im not taking it no more.

It works but makes you feel crappy.

It worked great for acne but it had horrible side effects. I do recommend it though because everyone is different.

Pros:

Greatly cleared up my facial and chest/back acne. Was very cheap for me- about $17

Cons:

The first couple weeks were terrible- lots of peeling, dryness and tightness. I still get some cysts around the chin, and the small papules are especially stubborn but getting better. Now I just need to find something for the scars..

Overall I've seen tremendous improvement, this was my first oral medication after having moderate acne for 6 years so I'm pretty happy with my results. New zits disappear quickly if you leave them alone. I'm also paired with tretinoin (morning) and benzoyl peroxide pads (evening).

Pros:

Cleared up acne entirely, taken mainly for breakouts on the chest and back - been on it for 6 years (with differin topical gel) and NO side effects. Works fast and is reliable.

Cons:

Hypersensitivity to sunlight (previously sensitive due to being 2 shades off albino...), and only works while I'm on it.

Like my doctor said, it's a medication that works while you use it, and trust me, it's true. 2 days without and my acne comes back with a vengeance. However, compared to sulfur based medications I've tried (which resulted in me being violently ill due to a high intolerance), it's a blessing, and one that I'd use again in a heartbeat.

Pros:

Easy to take

Cons:

Does not work, makes acne worse, acne takes forever to go away

I took Minocycline 2 times a day with differin at night. Made acne worse. Does not go away. Switched to using vitamin E to get rid of the scars. Would not recommend

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
