Pros:

Within three days, acne started to lessen to be very manageable.
No side effects so far.
Noticeable changes.

Cons:

The precautions you take (no eating or dairy while taking medicine in a 4 hour range)

Within three days, my acne started to lessen, in addition to switching to my latest topical medicine drug (in order to keep my body from resisting them). I switched from Acne Free to Salicylic acid pads and started taking Minocycline. I take only on one a night, which is what I personally recommend you should, as it allows the drug to last longer, and be less dramatic on any side effects. Most Importantly, DO NOT ... I repeat... DO NOT take this drug for longer than 5-6 months. You're foolish if you do. Straight up Foolish. Others below me, have made this mistake as they we're too un "read the directions/listen to your doctor" when taking this. If you do you risk many more of the side effects, and even possibly worse acne. If you're acne comes back after taking this medicine's use, start on a new prescription. But do not repeat. And remember, You always want to use different topical drugs on your skin in order to prevent resistance, but remember, be gentle. V

Pros:

I have tried many different medications for my acne rosecea. Minocycline is the only oral medication to have worked. Totally cleared up all my cysts and breakouts.

Cons:

My dermatologist has informed me that I may always have to take this medication which is scary thought.

I have never had any of these symptoms described here and I have taken this medication somewhat consistently for 2 years. I may go for 2 months without taking a pill but the first sign of a 'cyst' forming then I start the regimen again. I have just now been hearing of some of these severe reactions and I am just amazed I have not encountered them. However I am going to continue to research the long term usage of this drug as it looks like I have to use for many years to come to help control my rosecea. I recommend this medication but only with close medical supervision to see how your body will react.

Pros:

Starts to clear acne within days. No side effects yet but this forum scares me, so not sure how long I'll stay on...

Cons:

As soon as I stop taking them acne comes back in full force - very frustrating. Damned if you do and damned if you don't...

It does what it says... Clears up acne pretty quickly but you have to stay on them. My dr started me on 100mg 2 x day for first week and then down to once a day. I tried stopping them twice because was scared of developing side effects, but acne returned so I went back on them. I told my concerns to my dr and he said that the severe side effects only happen to a very few out of the thousands upon thousands of people that use this. He assured me that he would check my blood for liver damage and anything else every three months until I decide to stop. So I am scheduled for bloodwork in three months and will stay on Mino at least until then. Will write an update then....

Pros:

will fix up acne.... must give it time.

Cons:

None so far

Alright this is the real deal. I starting taking this 3 weeks ago today, and didn't really notice anything happening. In fact after 2 weeks my acne was the worst it has ever been and i just wanted to lay down and cry.... which i did. I wouldn't go out or anything. But i stuck with it and to my astonishment the following week the acne began to dissapear. No more breakouts, no more deep hurtful ones. Now I am just waiting for my scars to go away and i am happy to say that i will feel great going into college! Believe me this medication takes time to work so don't give up on it. Good Luck!

Pros:

Usually take mine 30 minutes before bedtime. No side effects noticed. Just take one a day for dry eyes, not skin related.

Cons:

None that I know of! If I miss it over 2 days, my eyelids will swell, so I try NOT to miss it! It's been the salvation of my eyes.

Went to 2 other docs for eye problems before the 3rd one prescribed minocycline for what was dry eyes (use Tears, too, 4 times daily). I thank the Good Lord for this 3rd doctor who knew what he was doing! I've been taking this antibiotic for 3 years now!

Pros:

Cleared my skin within weeks.

Cons:

None

Skin looked great until I started missing doses. Then seemed the medicine no longer worked. If you have insurance, the medicine is very inexpensive just make sure to take it consistantly.

Pros:

Cleared skin nicely
No side effects

Cons:

May become immune

Well after about six months of using clydoxyl gel and retin a to get rid of my mild/moderate acne with little success i was put on minocin by my derm. Its been about five months since i started it. I started on a low dose (50 mg twice daily) with some success. After another derm appointment i got bumped up to 100 mg twice daily. After 3 months of this my skin is almost completely clear. it worked extremely well along with differin gel and spectro gel and i definatley reccommend it. i get about one or two active spots every few weeks but other than that i have no active acne and very few red marks. I also am going to be getting accutane tommorow as a final precaution to hopefully cure my acne permanently.

Pros:

Cleared up my skin 100%!!!

Cons:

None!

This was great for me. A month and all my acne disappeared. It's an easy way to get rid of acne if you have tried every possible topical solution as I had. I used it along side Proactiv and it worked very well!

Pros:

cleared up all of my acne within a month, back, chest, and face.

Cons:

after using it about four diferent times my body got used to it, and it wouldn't work anymore.also gives you upset stomach and diarreah.

It cleared up all my acne within a month, but because it's a antibiotic you have drink a least 6 to seven full size glasses or bottles of water so that it can get into you're system or it won't work.

Pros:

skin very soft, acne almost all gone just lots of small marks left.

Cons:

even though ive only got mild acne, i still get one or two spots at least once a week. They are only small and go away in three days but still annoying.

Ive been on this for about 6 weeks and for the first few weeks nothing happened which really upset me. I didn't realise i'd have to be patient because i'd read other reviews that said acne had cleared up in days. Its now really clear with just marks left but i really hope it will continue to work until my face is completely clear.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
