Pros:

My mom says that my face starts to clear up when I'm on it, in combination with topical treatments, but I don't believe it. My favorite pro: now that topical treatments have reduced my acne, I'm not even going to try minocycline again.

Cons:

Always slightly nauseous when I'm on it, and can't help but get carsick/motionsick, headaches. Acne comes back after stopping (even after completely clearing up in a few months) and only seems to work when used with other treatments.

My doctor perscribed 100MG Minocycline twice daily. It was a nice cheap thing ($10 with my mom's insurance) so she didn't mind it. My mom is the oblivious type, however. SHE says that my skin clears up when I'm taking it, so she makes me take it, but she doesn't realize that I only get results when I'm taking Minocycline in conjunction with other topical regimens; I quit taking the minocycline but keep doing the topical regimen and I get the same results. It makes me slightly nauseous at all times and car rides are torturous - nevermind actually driving - and though I am already prone to headaches, they progress to migraines when I'm on the medication. I've settled on exfoliating with baking soda in the morning, wearing spot treatments of Proactiv's refining mask at night, and cleansing twice daily with Cetaphil for normal to oily skin (moisturizing in the morning with Cetaphil as well). It works better AND I don't have to put anything weird in my body.

Pros:

Gets rid of your acne at first, works really well during the first few months and especially if you havent used it before

Cons:

after a few months your body becomes immune to it and your acne starts to come back even worse

If you are going to start taking it, be constistent with every dose and once you start to break out really bad while you are on it, stop taking it, trust me and switch to something else. Miss a few doses and the bacteria become immune to it. My acne has gotten worse ever since that first bad break out. I dont know what to do with it anymore, ive tried everything. Go straight to accutane if you can.

Pros:

works ok in addition to other perscription topical medications

Cons:

not a real solution, acne will come back if you stop

works fairly well when using topicals, not a solution by itself, no drastic effects on acne, just helps a bit. although i didnt have it, apparently it can cause dramatic skin discoloration w/ scarring i do not use it anymore, just wasnt doing enough

Pros:

saw results after 3 days, redness gone away completely.

Cons:

nausea and vomiting like crazy and very expensive. you have to take it with a lot of food to avoid this.

its worth it. i have been taking it for only 2 weeks and it has done wonders to my skin. before i had crystal clear skin, and this is really worth the side effects :)

Pros:

After 6-8 weeks, I did see some slight improvement, but by then I was tired of taking the meds twice a day!

Cons:

Upset my stomach, broke out worse for first 6 weeks, has to be taken twice a day. LADIES: this drug and others like it (tetracycline, doxycycline) make the birth control pill less effective and you must use a backup method. For me it was too costly

There are probably better options out there than this drug. Minocycline, like all drugs in the Tetracycline family, make birth control pills less effective so a backup method must be used. It took a long time for me to see any results and it was frustrating to remember to take this medication twice a day This medication comes with a lot of warnings so make sure to read the information that your pharmacist gives you before taking this medication.

Pros:

it can help clear the skin if you take it as directed by MD but i wonder if dorex works better?

Cons:

It can upset the stomach a bit and I hate having to take it two times a day.

does any one think that Dorex is better than minocycline??? (my insurance costs me 10 with mino and 20 with dorex???? )

Pros:

works well

Cons:

my skin is starting to itch!

I used minocycline years ago and it worked really well with absolutely no side effects. Now I'm 42 and using it again (middle aged acne AND wrinkles -- life is truly unfair). Anyway, I've been taking it for a few weeks and started having weird itching episodes that are random and come and go... Very odd. Not so bad that I'd stop taking the minocycline, but we'll see how it goes...

Pros:

Helped clear up acne for a little bit.

Cons:

Severe nausea, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea.

NOT WORTH THE SIDE EFFECTS. I ended up back at the doctor to treat the side effects they were so bad. Also, as soon as I quit taking it, the acne came right back. I would rather have bad skin!

Cons:

I would exhaust all resources before using it.

Try topical before antibiotics

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
