Pros:

Cost $1 with insurance.
Easy to get a prescription for.

Cons:

This made me break out with cystic acne!! Worse acne than I ever had my entire life! I started getting blotches of acne(like 6 pimples in one spot) on my back, face, shoulders. I threw it away!

This stuff is definitely not for everyone.

Pros:

Easy to take (can eat with meals, just not dairy)

Cons:

I think it made my red marks more prominent, did not work at all to help my acne

I took Minocycline for about 5 months, and it did not improve my skin within that time period at all. On the contrary, my skin worsened to the point where I had to take Accutane. I'm not sure if Minocycline is the reason for this, or if it was just bound to happen anyway. The 5 months I had taken Minocycline were the worst 5 months of my life, because my skin was so terrible. I'm sure it will work for people with less severe acne than me. I know many people that have taken oral antibiotics with much success, however it did not work for me. I wish I had taken Accutane instead of Minocycline, it was much more effective.

Pros:

None...

Cons:

No improvement, waste of time and money

I took minocycline for three weeks, and was very optimistic because it was the first prescription acne treatment I had ever tried. I was in the state of mind "Well if a DOCTOR prescribed it to me, it's gonna work!" So I started taking pictures of my face everyday to watch the improvement. I didn't see any. Then one night about three weeks in I had a few strange little rough bumps on my chest. I woke up that night in a severe itch on my stomach and scalp. I thought maybe I had gotten bit by a bug, because that is what the marks looked like. That is until they spread over my entire body. It was the most painful experience of my life. I had to go to the emergency room because I was having an allergic reaction & my lips swelled up like a duck! The reaction took over three weeks to go away. It was horrible! AND NOW I HAVE A $1,000 ER BILL!!!!!

1. very dizzy, my acne got SO SO much worse. Like i'm getting a new pimple every single day now

i had mild acne before . now it severe. this medication SUCKS. honestly i've tried proactive which completely fcked up my face, stievamycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, and finally minocycline. out of all i feel that clindamycin worked the ULTIMATE best.

Pros:

did not see any improvement

Cons:

no improvement to my daughter's skin, caused her severe stomach pain

This did not help my daughter at all. I was not thrilled about her taking this since antibiotics are not good to take long term! After 6 months of use,we stopped due to no improvement and stomach pain. There are too many antibiotic resistant illnesses in population due to overuse of antibiotics.

Pros:

None in my opinion.

Cons:

I've been using this for a little over a month and a half with the Clean and Clear acne kit- no difference whatsoever. It doesn't really help with my blemishes(my main problem). It also made me dizzy and have headaches.

Try some other pill(or any other treatment) before trying this. I asked my dermatologist about whether it helps with oily skin, and he said that this pill doesn't help at all, so if you have oily skin and want something that'll help with that and acne, minocycline won't help you in that department. Definetly not worth all the headaches and dizzy spells.

Pros:

NONE. Does not clear acne, blemishes, zits, etc.

Cons:

Makes you hella tired, false hope, makes you feel SICK, dellusional and depressed, INCONVENIENT (must eat 2-3 hours after or 1 hour before taking), detrimental body effects overall...WASTE OF TIME

False hope. Tried tetracycline first. Neither worked. Minocycline made me sick, I had to schedule my eating times around it just so I could get the optimum results (which were none). WORSE PART is they made the sclera of my eye look pigmented/yellowish/not normal, made me break out in hives on my legs after a few months, and were a WASTE of TIME. I stopped taking them a while ago but I don't kno if it will help my eyes since taking any antibiotics for a prolonged period is never heatlhy. But I was desperate....

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
