Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Cons:

THROAT HURT!

my throat hurt ssooo much when I was on this. I accidentally forgot them one time when I ended up sleeping over at a friends house so I missed my regular dosage...long story short, by mid-afternoon the next day my throat didn't hurt.

Pros:

Keeps Skin clear, from PLEVA

Cons:

Dizzy, Blurry vision, headache

I have been taking this for almost a year. The side effects seem to get worse with time. It is better than having my body covered in a rash. However does anyone know the long term effects??

Pros:

Cleared my skin

I have a cleared skin after 4months of using Solodyn. Its a great medication, but not cheap. I hope that if I stop using it the acne does not come back.

Pros:

affordable, saw significant results in a few months

Cons:

causes immunity

it might not be today, it might not be tomorrow, but sooner or later you WILL become immune to this antibiotic. and once its effects wear off you will be sorry you ever took it. just a few months after i went off minocycline (foolishly thinking its effects were long term), my skin looked absolutely terrible. not realizing what was going on, i went BACK on the mino and it made my skin progressively worse.

Pros:

Unlike doxycycline, you dont have to take it with food, and it didnt make me vomit like doxy did sometimes.

Cons:

Ridiculously expensive without insurance! A 1 month supply of Solodyn (brand name minocycline) was going to cost me upwards of $500. I was floored.

I noticed a small difference with the minocycline, but it was about the same with the doxy. If price is an issue, I'de get the doxy, but otherwise, I prefer the minocycline because it's easier to take.

Pros:

Cleared up my skin 100%!!!

Cons:

None!

This was great for me. A month and all my acne disappeared. It's an easy way to get rid of acne if you have tried every possible topical solution as I had. I used it along side Proactiv and it worked very well!

Pros:

I mostly have zits on my chin and it did clear up my acne pretty well, almost completely with maybe one or two zits every so often.

Cons:

I was taking this for about 4 months when I started to notice my joints were begining to ache and my ankles became extremely swollen.

This medication did work for my intially and I wished I was still on it. I used to take Doxy which worked great but it made so sick and I would vomitt every other weak after taking this even after a meal. After about 4 months, my fingers would cramp up and one day I woke up with my middle finger curled in and I couldn't extend it back. I had to go to the doctor to get an injection to loosen up my joints. At first the doctors thought I had rhumetiod athritis but then I finally saw a specialist who said I had drug induced lupus. I stopped taking it and within two days all my symtoms when away. The doctor said it only happens in 5 percent of people who use it, I guess I was one of the unfortunate ones. I do reccomend it because it did work but I just wanted to let people know that drug induced lupus could occur in some people while taking this.

Pros:

Cleared up face very well.

Cons:

Experienced acid reflux, was confused, depressed and i can relate to people that felt effected mentally.

worked well to clear up acne, but i was off it within a week because of the side effects. by the way that i felt on the drug, i must say that the clearing up of my skin was not worth the side effects.

Cons:

This made me very dizzy from the beginning but you can kind of ignore it.

I was only Minox for a week when I started getting an allergic reaction to it so I had to come off it but I didn't notice any improvement to my skin because I obviously wasn't on it long enough.

Pros:

Looks like its working for now or maybe I'm fooling myself..again

Cons:

Can't take with food, can't take anything with alot of calcium, serious headaches and so dizzy can't do anything (like goto work or school) makes you not hungry

Nice alternative with a cost..I hope not to have a huge break out after i get off it which would make this a total waste of time

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
