Pros:

Clears up skin very nicely.

Cons:

It was difficult to initially switch to using this medication, because of how much it dried up my skin and made it red/flaky. Do not begin using it right away twice a day. It is a good idea "ramp up."

Definitely try this medication if you have acne. Ramp up to your doctor's recommendation. I think that it took me less time to ramp up because I had used benzoyl peroxide for a while previously.

Pros:

Breakouts healed faster, breakouts less severe and often, skin tone has improved.

Cons:

Takes awhile before improvement is seen, feels slimy, hard to wear under makeup, bleaches clothing and sheets, does not help with blackheads or whiteheads

My doctor gave me two separate scripts for benzoyl peroxide 2.5% and Erythromycin topical gel which he told me to mix and then apply 2x per day. When you mix them together it creates a slime that just flakes off my skin. I applied the benzoyl peroxide then waited until i was absorbed and applied the Erythromycin on top in a 'patting' or 'tapping' motion to prevents the BP from becoming slimy. It dried out my existing pimples within a day or so but I saw no other improvement for about 3 weeks-except that my breakouts were healing faster. I am at the start of week 5 and my skin is much clearer-the breakouts have subsided. My whiteheads and blackheads have not been affected at all and my skin is still 'bumpy' in the areas it has been for a couple of years now. This treatment works well if you mostly have pimples but I will be seeking other treatment options for my whiteheads and blackheads since this has had no effect on them.

Pros:

Clears/prevents acne. its started working within a week for me, cleared my cysitc acne, smally whiteheads and blackheads, my skin is baby smooth after 2 months of continous usage [i apply this product in a thin layer all over face at night]

Cons:

Taste bad/drys skin a bit. when i stop using it for some time i start getting little ones.

I love this product, the ONLY thing that worked on my moderate acne, i went through a period of time where m skin was HORRIBLE i mean cystic acne and little tiny pimples all over my cheeks, i would cry sometimes ;(, until i went to my GP and she prescribed me this. it started working within a week, definite improvement, my skin is baby smooth for the most part, expect for that time of the month when i get 1 or 2 pimples but is no big deal. def. worth it, the thing to remember is to give products like this up to 4 months of try.

Pros:

dries out pimples sometimes over night... great results... makes your skin smooth and prevents other blemishes

Cons:

it does make your skin dry but just moisturize. it can also make ur skin sensitive if you over use it so dont...

this product works... drink a lot of water and dont touch your face or pick at your bumps. also keep your hair clean. doing these few tings will speed up the healing process.

Pros:

My face cleared up beautifully in 2 - 3 days. A Wonder drug for me. WOW...

Cons:

If you really work the cream in the white haze will go away. If not a small amount of facial cream will take care of this.

This product was a life saver. My face would break out at random for no reason that I could pinpoint. My skin is beautiful now and I am thrilled with the outcome thus far.

Pros:

I can see results already after using it for a few days. I have mild-moderate acne and I've noticed that my blemishes are starting to dissapear.

Cons:

My skin is dry! I naturally have combination dry skin, so using this product has started to really dry out my skin. I've started using a moisturizer with it so hopefully that will help.

It's looking good so far. I've never used a medicated acne cream before, (i did the proactive thing but that didn't work). I got it for free as a sample from my doctor (the sample package lasts for a bit over a month), so I'm lucky to get it at no cost. I would recommend trying it, considering I've seen results already I'm expecting it to only get better!

Pros:

Put bad acne immediately under control - disinfects the pores of your skin

Cons:

Bleaches clothes - be careful when applying around the neck. Even rubbing against your collar will bleach fabric. I would suggest applying only to problem areas to disinfect. If it's your neck, look at collarless shirts/tops.

Excellent results!! I'm 43 and have been combating acne since I was 13. I also use Retin-A and the combination seems to keep my skin tone even (I'm an olive skinned Latino). The air is L.A. is full of car pollution and I broke out real bad when I moved here, but after using retin-A and occasional periods of Benzamycin (if I have a bad breakout), I find this to be a fine skin solution. My face looks great and the skin tone is even. And not that expensive considering each jar is good for 3 months! I don't know if I'm an exception. My dermatologist also suggested a low oil diet, which definitely seemed to help (no fried foods, no lactose products)- and I also lost weight! It's true the better you feel inside will also show on the outside! Best of luck to all you fellow acnes sufferers!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
