Acne.org’s Real World Take
A more dangerous way of using benzoyl peroxide that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. However, when used properly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin without the addition of antibiotics.

Pros:

Gets rid of uncomplicated acne very fast (doesn't help with cysts)
Smooths skin

Cons:

Really drys your skin
Bleaches fabrics
Tastes awful

During the school year I get terrible breakouts around my t-zone but recently I've had really bad breakouts on my cheeks. I used this product because it was the only cream/gel that worked fast in the past. However there are consequences to overusing it. A little goes a long way with the product. This product works effectively if you wash your face with a very mild unscented soap like dove for sensitive skin. Stick to the regimen by not overworking the skin and rinse with COOL water not hot or warm... trust me it makes the world of difference!!! Then apply a thin layer making sure to work the product in gently at night. During the day make sure to use a good moisturizer to rehydrate the skin. This product will dry your skin out but after around 4 weeks of use, your skin will become used to it, and wont look so irritated after applying it. This product is great but you really do have to use it sparsely, wash your face with cool water and give it time.

Pros:

Helps clear skin

Cons:

I use the gel and it has to be refrigerated so not good when traveling or in my dorm (fridge is too cold).

I'd like to find something like this that doesn't have to be kept cold.

Pros:

Clears u[ acne period.

Cons:

Does dry out skin, but this can be reduced if used with a good moisturizer.

It works. I have used Proactive, clean and clear, Acne Free, other face washes, Neutrogena... ect. nothing really seemed to work. I have only used Benzaclin for about a month, but my acne is completely clear. I also combined it with Lipocream which is a RX to help reduce dryness. Now I am using it with Diffrin to fully restore my skin to smoothness and even texture. but it works great and I am completely sastified. Just give it time, thats how the BP works to kill the bacteria deep down.

Pros:

Gets ride of acne

Cons:

Need Prescription, Flaky, Will stains some bed sheets

I have been using the BenzamycinePak for about 4 years. Works very well. I apply 1 pak before bed. My skin is very clear. If I miss a few days I notice appear. Dont use the generic product, it dried up my face.

Pros:

It definitely helps clear up acne, being most effective with white and blackheads. Cystic acne and pustules just take time, although this product helps eliminate spreading.

Cons:

This severely dries out my skin if I use too much. Little is definitely more with this! I see more results using about a half a pea-sized worth for my entire face. Otherwise my face gets too dry and aggrivates my acne.

This definitely works for all types of acne. Be careful how much you use because it will severely dry your skin. Use a good moisturizer and you should be able to avoid dry, flakey and red skin. Little is more... don't use more than a pea-sized amount at a time.

Pros:

Clears skin FAST

Cons:

Doesn't really help fade red post-acne marks

This product is very good at eliminating breakouts if applied everyday. Although it doesn't help old red acne marks much, it's still a good product.

Pros:

Works very good, skin clears fast.

Cons:

it later ceases to work.

great for the quick clear but stops working

Pros:

Makes my skin more even toned. Makes emerging pimples go awawy quicker. My forehead use to be horrible but it is COMPLETELY clear now! Also, my nose is clear too.

Cons:

Lots of peeling on chin area and sides of cheeks. I still have white heads on my chin. Still have cystic acne on cheeks.

I use a cetaphil face wash/moisturizer in the morning and use retin-a over it. Then at night i put the benzamycin on after washing my face with cetaphil. Although my face feels tight like it is in a mask, i have to say that my acne has gotten significantly better. My dermatologist told me that it takes about four months for the benzamycin to clear your face up, because it brings the pimples under the surface up. Don't be discouraged if you don't see improvements in a few weeks. Wait a while.

Pros:

Dries skin, my skin is naturally oily so now its pretty much normal.Significant difference in the amount of acne on my face.I suffer from moderate acne nothing severe and I've been using this medication for 4 months now. My skin is beautiful.

Cons:

Certain areas have become a little too dry and I hate the white stuff that appears when it dries. But all in all I find it to be effective

I think it works well for me, but that may be because I have moderate acne. I controls my oil production and I my skin is really smooth, an besides a couple black heads my skin is flawless. I'll give it 2 more months.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
