A more dangerous way of using benzoyl peroxide that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. However, when used properly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin without the addition of antibiotics.

Pros:

finally, something effective for ALL acne types

Cons:

it dries the skin, leaving the most acne prone areas a bit flakey, and the white residue can leave skin feeling a bit dirty.

the cons are a pain, but moisturizer used after the application of the gell helps with the flaking, and i'm assuming that after i use it a bit longer, this side effect will get better. i recently had a baby, which threw my hormones out of whack, and my face, particularly my jawline, completely erupted, and i felt 15 all over again...not in a good way, mind. so, i talked to my doc, and have been using this for a few weeks. it's really taken the worst of the acne away, though some of the cysts are stubborn, so i recommend patience. i started seeing real results after a few days, and each day is better than the last. that says soooo much more than any other meds i've ever tried. my insurance covered it, leaving me to pay a small amount, so check out your coverage, talk to your doc, and give it a try.

Pros:

It works very quickly and amazed my Doctor after 10 years of unsuccessful treatment.

Cons:

Has to be stored in a fridge.

I haven't been able to get a new supply and my face has erupted. I had get used to having no acne and so hope they start manufacturing again for the UK.

Pros:

very effective product. the only that's ever consistently worked for me. after using retin-a, benzoil/eurythromycin seperately but together and anti-biotics too. i noticed that it not only gets rid of the cysts but helps to keep them from returning

Cons:

bleaches out fabrics

i restate this product was much more effective than using benzoil and eurythromycin simultaneously but in conjunction. in other words benzamycin consists of more than just those two products together. but dermatologists will perscribe them one in the same. at least they have to me. for someone whose suffered from cystic acne from 16 to 36 this is the best treatment i've received. i recomend

Brilliant stuff - works really well, I am having problems getting hold of it too - the Chemist told me that it will be back in production in 2007 - no ideas which month though - any one heard any different?

Pros:

Cleared my acne noticeably within a week and even works on my back and neck/chest area

Cons:

leaves white on face after it dries

I highly recommend it because it's fast and works so much better than anything else I've ever used before!

Pros:

quite affordable, and clears acne

Cons:

really dries out your face

i tried this with mixing it with vinegar and put it on my face as a mask for 2 dies, reapplying as needed and then went off for one week, then i did it again over and over. One night i woke up and all my nasties were gone!!!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
