Pros:

cheap cheap cheap

Cons:

didn't do ANYTHING
gave me stomach aches

I tried this after getting off of the ery tab (ery. was giving me awful, awful stomach aches, but it worked). I used this a couple of weeks after ery, so I had a few pimples. This did NOTHING for them. I was ticked.

BLOOD WORK!

Before going to the dermo, I would give my acne severity a 8/10 (10 being extremely severe.) I started the pill in April 2009(age 13), it is now (almost) August 2011(age 16). April 2009- October 2009: I took this pill EVERYDAY with the combination of epiduo nightly. Seemed to improve acne slightly. Acne severity: 6.5/10 October 2009- March 2010: I took pill EVERYDAY with a combo of differin nightly. Acne severity 4.5/10. March 2010- December 2010: I took pill EVERYDAY with combo of Benzaclin day and night. Acne severity: 1.5/10 December 2010- May 2011: I took pill EVERY OTHER day with combo of benzaclin day and night. Acne severity: 1.5/10 May 2011- present day: I take pill EVERY THIRD DAY with combo of benzaclin. Acne severity: 1.7/10. Actually, I'm not sure if it got worse. I believe its gotten worse on my chest, but it's summer so idk if it's weather related. I think i'm going to try going completely off of the pill because I think the cons out-weigh the pros and I have to get another blood test in order to get another prescription. I will edit the review once its out of my system. As you can see, it is debatable whether the pill did anything at all to clear up my acne. Presumably, it was the topicals that lessened the acne. I wouldn't take Doxycycline simply because its a short-term fix and its not safe to take this pill for a long time. It's hard to know whether it does anything and whether its cause side-effects. In retrospect, I wish I never started taking the pill. Contact me if you have any questions or any experiences going off this pill. I know how annoying acne is and I want to help.

Pros:

Clears acne
Convenient pill form
Inexpensive generic medication

Cons:

Hard on stomach lining
Nausea

This was the most effective and cheapest acne solution I've found, but it's not worth it. I'm tired of feeling sick all the time. My dermatologist warned that this can be hard on the stomach, and is not recommended as a long-term solution. I totally get that now.

Pros:

clear skin

Cons:

can cause allergic reaction; not a long-term solution for acne.

i was on this for about 6 months. it worked really well and cleared up my acne. however, 6 months into it, i began to get really itchy bumps on my limbs that were huge. at first i thought it was an insect bite or bed bug, but i took some clarityn and the lumps and itchiness disappeared. that made me realise that i had become allergic to it. i also noticed from photographs that my skin had this yellow-jaundiced tint indicative of liver damage. once i came off it, my body returned to normal!! acne came back. bottom line - being on antibiotics is NOT a long term solution for acne!! acne will come back once u stop taking it and in the process u may cause a lot of internal damage!

Pros:

Started to help take down some inflammation and painful swelling.

Cons:

Gave me agonising stomach cramps, a thrush infection, burning sensation in chest, made it difficult to keep food down, didn't do anything more than take some inflammation down and didn't stop or prevent any spots from forming at all.

If your acne is an infection or infected, your main problem is inflammation and you are prepared to man out some really dreadful side effects then this may be the antibiotic for you. If not, then this isn't likely to help improve acne.

Pros:

got rid of most of the acne on my back, and most of the cyst zits that I would get on my face.

Cons:

the pill is big, it doesn't do ANYTHING for blackheads though

I have been using it for a few months and it helps a bit, but I still have really bad acne. It isn't a cure or quick fix, but it does help.

Pros:

Less red inflation

Cons:

Not seeing much progress

Ive been on it 100mg twice a day for 3 weeks now and the only thing that it has done for me is decreased red inflammation of my zits. I'm still breaking out and it's only slightly better. Going to a dermatologist again tomorrow to get something that will work faster and better

Pros:

It does fight acne

Cons:

stops working as soon as you take it
not for everyone (made me puke no matter what I did)

Although this did clear my acne when I took it, my stomache cannot handle it. At first I could eat and no worry about it making me sick... but over time my body just rejects this medicine and it made me puke at random. One day I would take it and be fine the next I'd throw up again. Personally I wouldn't suggest people use this medication unless you think your acne is simply due to a bacterial infection. It stops working as soon as you go off of it. & you cannot use antibiotics for long peroids of time because it interupts the good bacteria in your digestive tract which could lead to c-diff (a very nasty intestional infection). Not that this happened to me but it can very well happen. If anything i'd suggest this as a temporary solution to clear your sebacious glands of bacteria... but then you have to search for a more perminate solution.

Pros:

-cleared up some of my acne (mostly on my chest and back)

Cons:

-made my stomach hurt, sometimes I couldn't handle it and would actually vomit

I was so gratefull to have my chest and back acne cleared up. However, this perscription made my stomach very upset. One time I accedently put one of these pills in the washer and it came out about 4 times the size it was originaly. This made me relize that this is what it was doing in my stomach. (No wonder it made me sick) It didnt clear up the acne on my face at all, but I guess it was nice to be able to wear low cut tops.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
