Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Cons:

- didnt really do anything for my acne
-probably made it worse

ive had acne since i was 15 at school and im now 18 and its started to come back to how bad it was about a year and a half ago. after using OTC stuff from the super market i used pro active that was the worse decision ever so i went to the doc and he gave me duac BP gel this worked amazing for about 8 months then started to not work at all then i went back about 2 months ago and he gave me doxy 100mg per day for 4 months im half way through and havent noticed any difference. probably made it worse. so i went back and he said that my acne isnt that bad i just need to wait till i grow out of it ): he also told me that if this doesnt work then there would be the other antibiotics then accutane but he also told me that i wouldnt have a chance of getting on that because my acne isnt severe enough. so i guess i will just have to wait but want to get clear for when my baby is born in november. things i use that might help you: -nivia for men sensitive face wash -lloyds pharmacy spotclear advance (this is a red light theropy device) -pure lemmon juice -multi vitamins - still use duac BP gel i hope this helps you guys suffering from persistant acne ohh and i i have the best diet ever i only eat healthy foods fruit and veg but the doc told me that diet has nothing to do with acne?

Pros:

No dry scaly skin
Easy to treat acne all over your body
Effective

Cons:

Cannot continue treatment for more than 6 months
Results in an upset stomach if taken on an empty stomach

With other acne treatments I have had which were always a topical medication, it was a pain to treat my entire torso and face. If I did regularly stick to treating all my acne prone areas, then i would run out of product very quickly. Doxycycline was easy because all i needed to do was take a pill and it solved acne problems everywhere on my body. It also didn't give me dry scaly skin that I always seem to get with other treatments. My face cleared up very quickly and my skin became very clear. My back took a bit longer, maybe about a month or two. I did experience a sore stomach once or twice, but that really was my fault because I didn't have it after a proper meal. The major downside is that I cannot continue the treatment. As an antibiotic, its hard to get it prescribed again. Even if i did, there is the possibility that the bacteria causing the acne will grow resistant to treatment.

Pros:

No side effects (except I feel a little tired always)

Cons:

Just plain didnt work

My dr prescribed this for acne that was not being kept under control by Differin and benzaclin. It didn't make any difference, dr said the bacteria are probably resistant. Trying minocycline next. I would recommend giving it a shot, since it seems to work for most people, and there are minimal side effects (do not however take it on an empty stomach no matter what the bottle says)

Pros:

Reduces inflammation for cystic acne.
Cheap.
Fast working (2-3 weeks)

Cons:

Some side effects (nausea, etc) - but only when not taken properly i.e., with food, and sitting up.

Started using Doxycycline when I experienced side effects from Monocycline antibiotics. My acne was severe with very large and painful cysts on my forehead and it rapidly improved after just a few weeks. My skin is now (almost) blemish free :) Only downside is that I'm scared to go off them and my prescription runs out in a month.

Pros:

Helpful for some

Cons:

Not long-term (when prescribed properly)
Did not clear my skin
Sun sensitivity

Because of a predisposition for yeast infections (be careful with antibiotics, girls!) I can no longer take antibiotics. Took doxy for over a year but topicals were more useful. Antibiotics are over-prescribed and, when used properly, should NOT be used for more than 3-6 months.

Pros:

Clears up acne

Cons:

If you stop using it, you will get breakouts

SO basically i am 15...I used it for 2 months (twice a day) and then i ran out and it has been 2 weeks now... During the 2 months I used it I got no breakouts...All of a sudden in the past 2 weeks, every single day i have had a breakout and my acne has gotten redder and probably worst I am probably going to get prescribed again, so I suggest you keep doing this until your acne is little to none.

Pros:

Did not get deep pimples for a week or two

Cons:

Started to get more cysts (more than I've ever had on my face at one time) once I took 100mg twice a day
Yeast infection
Nausea if not taken with food

I've been taking 100mg once a day from August 24th to mid-september. But I realized I was actually supposed to be taking 100mg TWICE day, so I've been taking 100mg twice a day for about a month now and my acne is not really getting better now. I'm not going to lose hope but this was about $70.00 in Canada and I really hope it ends up working. The true bottom line is follow what your dermatologist says. I've also been using differin and benzaclin so I'm not sure what's helping/not helping.

Pros:

Gets rid of acne on both body and face.

Cons:

Increased Sensitivity to the sun
Gets rid of all bacteria not JUST bad bacteria so decreases immunity.

I think that this product works really well and i am happy with the results, if you are going to try it you just need to make sure that you wear sunscreen and it may help to take extra tablets to put all the good bacteria back in your body.

Pros:

decrease in facial acne
decrease in body acne

Cons:

diarrhea
nausea

I started taking this several months before my wedding to clear up my skin. The only side effects I noticed was that it caused diarrhea almost every day. Also, if I took it on an empty stomach I felt very, very nauseous. The first month I broke out pretty bad but after about 4-6 wks I noticed a big improvement. I did not have any sensitivity to the sun that I noticed. The Rx was really cheap for me compared to some acne products I spent over $60 on. If you can get past the diarrhea and the 4-6 wks it takes before you notice improvement, it's worth a try, especially since it's so cheap. I did have really clear skin all over for my wedding so I am very glad I took this.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
