Pros:

-Cleared my skin

Cons:

-Sensitive to the sun

I had only moderate acne and bad scaring and this pill definitely cleared my skin up. It looks amazing now compared to how it used to. I've only been taking it since April and it took maybe 2 months to get my face completely clear. I have never gotten sick from taking this medicine. I got my prescription from my pediatrician not my dermatologist and my pediatrician told me to take it once a night after I eat and drink it with a full glass of water and to watch out for dairy products. I followed her rules for the first month but now I just take it at night with whatever and on an empty stomach and I'm still fine. The only bad thing I have to say about doxycycline is that I can't get lay out for hours and hours anymore without literally turning bright red. I love it other than that!!

Pros:

Clears acne
Convenient pill form
Inexpensive generic medication

Cons:

Hard on stomach lining
Nausea

This was the most effective and cheapest acne solution I've found, but it's not worth it. I'm tired of feeling sick all the time. My dermatologist warned that this can be hard on the stomach, and is not recommended as a long-term solution. I totally get that now.

Pros:

- Removed cysts
- Reduced inflammation, pain, swelling, etc.
- Reduced number of regular "zits"

Cons:

- Nausea if taken on an empty stomach
- Complete cure for my cysts, but not for all other acne lesions

- I took 100 mg in the morning, and 100 mg at night. - I also washed my face twice a day with 2.5% BP wash, then followed with 5 or 10% BP gel and a moisturizer if needed. If you have acne characterized by large, painful cysts, I highly suggest taking this medicine (or another antibiotic). Persistent picking caused an infection in both of my cheeks, and numerous cysts under the skin. This medicine cleared it up without fail. Before this, my acne was always sore and bleeding, and would open up at very awful moments, like in public or when I was sleeping. I haven't had anything awful -- no large painful bumps or terrible red bleeding messes -- since taking this medicine. While it definitely cleared my cysts it also cleared some of my regular zits, but not all. I still have a few zits left, but these are slowly going away. They aren't NEARLY as bad as my cysts! Overall I'm thankful, and the doxy did a wonderful job but didn't clear me 100%, so it gets a 4/5. Overall: If you have BAD acne, take this or another antibiotic! You'll be happy you did. (Notes: Some people experience a reduction in gut flora when taking this long-term, resulting in intestinal issues. I haven't had this problem. Others also experience yeast infections. I also did not have this problem.)

Pros:

clear skin

Cons:

can cause allergic reaction; not a long-term solution for acne.

i was on this for about 6 months. it worked really well and cleared up my acne. however, 6 months into it, i began to get really itchy bumps on my limbs that were huge. at first i thought it was an insect bite or bed bug, but i took some clarityn and the lumps and itchiness disappeared. that made me realise that i had become allergic to it. i also noticed from photographs that my skin had this yellow-jaundiced tint indicative of liver damage. once i came off it, my body returned to normal!! acne came back. bottom line - being on antibiotics is NOT a long term solution for acne!! acne will come back once u stop taking it and in the process u may cause a lot of internal damage!

Pros:

none

Cons:

it didn't have any effect on my acne

I've been on doxycycline for a month, and my skin is still breaking out. I took it everyday, used a benzoyl peroxide wash and a moisturizer, and still NOTHING. I really wanted it to work, but sadly it didn't.

Pros:

-Cleared up acne pretty quickly
-Easy to swallow

Cons:

-Nausea (If not taken with food, you can eventually end up vomiting)
-Extreme sun sensitivity
-Tiredness
-Mild depression (Not sure if this was the meds)
-Tingling in the hands and feet

It's a pretty good antibiotic due to the fact that it works pretty quickly and effectively. The only major problem i only had with it was that it caused pretty bad skin reactions and sensitivity. But all in all, it works pretty good.

It works.

Pros:

-Cleared up acne
-Used for staph infection on left cheek

Cons:

-The worst cysts you will have for the rest of your life
-Cysts = scarring
-puss filled pimples

I was actually acne free for the past two years consistently. Suddenly though I ended up getting a staph infection on my left cheek. It looked like a nickle-sized hickey, but infected and gross looking. I am a 23/m, so not sure if my hormones level started to taper off causing me to be acne free; which is a lot of times the reason for acne. The doctor prescribed me Doxy-100mg for 10 days, 2 times a day, for the staph infection. This all happened about, mid-May-2011. 2 months later... Major cysts. Before I had maybe 1 or 2 small cysts every other month or so.... but now... cysts are like the new breakout pimple. Never had puss filled pimples in a long time, probably back in highschool when I was 17...18.. now though, it's back. Really bad puss filled pimples then turns into cysts. sucks. Not sure what to do. I have a pretty clean diet, drinks a lot of water for hydration and normal detox. so... not sure, don't take doxy. Yeah you get the results WHILE you're taking it... but After?! You'll hate your face. Not joking.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
