Doxycycline is an oral antibiotic that works by fighting bacteria in the body, including in the skin, and also reduces inflammation. It should be used only short term (max. 3 months).

It is usually prescribed at a dose of 50 to 100 mg once or twice per day.

Pros:

very cheap

Cons:

it seems as if my face is getting worse

ive been taking doxycycl 50mg for 4days and havent seen any improvement. However my dermatologist said it gets worse before it gets better. :/ no side effects so far although you might want to have a snack before. Hopefully it kicks in soon!

Pros:

Didn't give a false sense of being a magical cure to acne. Cleared skin gradually and kept skin clear even a week after discontinued use.

I was wondering what was giving me that horrible stomach pain...

After suffering from increasing acne for about four years that had started to moved to my shoulders and back..Proactive didn't do anything but made it worse, Retin-A worked for a while and then made my skin peel..I saved up some allowance to finally go to the dermatologist. He gave me prescriptions for doxycycline pills in conjunction with a benzoyl peroxide gel, and another gel called Tazorac..The first week with use i noticed that my skin felt a little for smoother and touchable..and continued to stay like that for another week, and got better every week after that, i had no breakouts unless i forgot to take the medications, but once i got back on them..they continued where they left off. Now i have no more refills after about 2 months and now a week without them just the gels my acne has not really become worse, perhaps little inflammation but proper rest, adequate water, and remembering to use the gels at night and its better in the morning..

Pros:

Horrible nausea if taken on empty stomache
Acne returned after stopping use.

It worked at about the 3 month mark and cost a total of $18. My acne finally seemed to be responding to some sort of treatment which was good news for me. It did return, however, and in full force about a month or two after I stopped taking it (derm said I could stop). I chose to stop taking it because of the intense nausea I got if i took it on an empty stomache and the chore of having to remember it twice a day. Now I'm feeling really low because my face is back to being worse than when I started the treatment...

Pros:

cheap.

Cons:

remembering to take it twice a day, and with food & water.

I just started taking it- been on it for about a week. the doc told me it may get worse, before it gets better. I've still had a break out, since i started. BUT the pimples weren't as inflamed... hopefully, i see more results in the near future. good luck to you all.

Pros:

Kept moderate acne under control. I didn't breakout while taking it.

Cons:

It can cause esophagitis if you lay down after taking it. Made me very dizzy after taking it for a while.

if you have severe or moderate-severe don't even try. helps a little for less severe

Pros:

It's definitely clearing my skin. Easy to take. Cheap.

Cons:

Hate the idea of long term antibiotics, so I take a probiotic, which itself is expensive.

I take Doxy as a part of a regime. I don't know how it would work alone. I've tried just about everything including dietary detox, which does help, but even with that I still got the deep cysts around my period and still had acne in places other than my face. I'm 41 years old and have it on my neck, back and shoulders, which I never did as a teen. I'm not sure how long I'll stay on, but it really has helped amazingly well. I haven't had any of the stomach issues, surprisingly, but I have taken it near a (dairy free) meal on purpose. I'm also on topical clindamycin for my back and Differin, which as a bonus is helping the fine lines on my face...YAY!

Pros:

I often had those thick white pimples on my face which leave thick dark scars, I took it for a vaginal thrush and noticed that I had no more breakouts on my face.

Cons:

You have to drink it with lots of water and with food.

It helps a lot so try it.

Pros:

first time i started taking it [100mg 2x day] it worked like a charm [1 month and i had no acne]+ its cheap

Cons:

after i stopped taking it, i started to slowly break out, i got it again but it's been about a week and a half and it hasnt done anything, its just gotten worse, i'll give it some more time i guess

i always seem to break out during summer, i started taking doxycycline in december and stopped in april and it has cleared my face, chest and back. after about a month [may] i started breaking out again.

Pros:

does clear up acne, would recommend it

Cons:

take them after something to eat or just before. i took once on empty stomach and was nearly sick and went really light headed

dont let bad reviews put you off, it does work

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
