Pros:

Helped to reduce redness and tough dry skin. made the skin feel softer and helped it look better.

Cons:

Was extremely sensitive to the sun so I had to avoid getting sunburned even if I was out in the sun for 20mins. After 1hr of taking the pill I felt realy sick for at least 10-15mins maybe more.

Had to take 2 pills a day for 3 months because I had really bad acne. I was going to go on it for another 3 months but because it kept making me feel sick of the last 2 months that I had to take it I had to stop tkaing the pills. It is very afordable and works quite well but do take in to mind the side effects. Also as soon as I stoped taking the pills almost all the side effects stoped besides being sensitive to the sun but that only lasted about a week after I had stop taking the pills.

Pros:

Cleared my cystic acne within a month, even on my back.

Cons:

Made me feel sick to my stomach. No Iron or dairy within two hours of taking it. After seven or eight months of taking it stopped working.

At first it was great. It cleared me up in a month like my Dr. said. I took it at night before bed with crackers or it would make me feel really nauseous but worth it for the results. However after taking it for awhile my acne started coming back. At first just a little bit and after an other couple of months it was as bad as ever. Not only got my cystic acne back but also all these small bumps around neck and my hairline which I didn't have before. I have stopped taking it. now I'm on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and have started to clear up again.

Pros:

Haven't had any pros yet.

Cons:

My acne is getting worse than it was.

I haven't encountered any problems with photo-sensitivity yet, but I also spend the majority of my day inside, and wear SPF makeup. If I eat it with meals and don't lay down for 2 hours afterward (what they recommended) then my stomach is fine. I've been taking it consistently for a month and my acne is just getting worse. And the other reviews here worry me that if I even consider going off of it, my face will get even worse. I'm not so sure about this drug.

Pros:

Doesn't have many side effects if you take it with food

Cons:

Doesn't really work

I've been on doxycycline for a LONG time, and it has made my acne go from horrific to acceptable, but it hasn't done much else, and I'm trying something new now.

Pros:

Cleared up my face almost completely within only 1 week, starts working very fast!

Cons:

After 3 wks I started noticing a sensitivity to heat and cold in my hands and feet, like pins and needles. When cold wind would come up, it felt like rain on my hands, in the shower my feet and hands would burn. I found out it was an allergic reactio

I would definitely reccomend it, but beware of any allergic reactions...the side effects (like sensitivity to sunlight) didn't start occuring until I was on the medication for a little while. Very important to drink lots of water and don't take it on an empty stomach. If it makes you feel nauseous then I would reccomend buying yogurt like Bio-K or dan actives, the good bacteria in them helps replace the stuff you need that the antibiotic kills.

Pros:

Works for a few months, can be totally clear for weeks at a time.

Cons:

Stops working eventually, and the acne comes back suddenly and with a vengence. Made the skin from my neck upwards much darker.

While it works, it's good. But it did make the skin from my neck upwards much darker. I don't know if that's photosensitivity or what, but when I'm topless, my body is a pale yellow/beige colour, but my neck is this dark, slightly reddish colour. It's actually really unpleasant. It actually looks like a make-up line. I would recommend this only as an interim medication, not for extended use. Two or three months at the maximum.

Pros:

I haven't really noticed a big different, maybe fewer deep pimples.

Cons:

Makes me really sick if not taken with food, but isn't absorbed by the body as well with food. Just kind of annoying to have to remember to take it after meal.

Really haven't noticed that much of a difference. I feel like there are better products out there. Maybe I will give it a little longer.

Pros:

Reduced redness.Slowly spots are going...not completely gone yet!

Cons:

Sensitive to sunlight.Must take it with yogurt or food and lots of water!!! Upset my stomach at first but then it's settled down.

I'm going use up my prescription (1 month) and go back for more if it's working well. I'm only on 100mg a day though. It seems to be less harsh than Ethromycin.

Pros:

It definitely works, eventually. It's a medication you have to be very patient with. Reduced redness, less whiteheads, breakouts from monthly complications aren't as bad, more controlled.

Cons:

It doesn't work if you drink milk one hour before or after. Watch what you're eating for calcium and iron before you take it.
I've gotten noticeably tanner, but I've accepted that this is also due to my genes. Using sunblock is a must!!

I was prescribed this in January of '07, and I'm terrible at routine so I did not take it regularly. I finally kicked it into gear about a month ago along with fish oil and topical vitamin E. I've been taking it regularly at 12:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M. every day. Twice a day, 100 mg. Ever since most of the strange swollen whiteheads on my cheeks have disappeared, only a couple left to go. Definite disappearance in redness, I now have an almost even complexion. All I had to do was follow routine and drink lots of water with it! It's all worth it. I don't think I'd recommend it for anyone that has BEYOND mild acne, it might not be as effective. Could be wrong, though.

Pros:

It temporarily keeps acne from reappearing.

Cons:

I don't like the taste of the tablet.
It melts real fast in your mouth if you leave it in there too long without water.

I woud use this, if your patient. It works eventually, I did see some difference from when i started a few months ago.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
