Pros:

not sure yet

Cons:

I have been a little spacey. Burns my throat if not taken with tons of water.

I really hope this works. I have been taking it for 5 days now for cystic acne and no improvement yet. I was also prescribed duac and differin one applied in the morning and the other at night.

Pros:

The blue colored pills.

Cons:

My acne didnt improve at all.

About 5 years ago I went to Thailand and was prescribed doxycycline for malaria and my doctor mentioned it can be used for acne and it really cleared up my minor acne. A little over a month ago my derm prescribed doxy and I was positive it would clear up my acne but unfortunately it did not. Doxy actually didnt do anything for me. However, I really like the vibrant blue pills and it is used to treat a lot of things such as syphilis and chlamydia so thats always good. Initially I was a little unsure about doxy because my derm told me to make sure and eat when I take it because it can make you sick and to not take it before bed because it can burn a hole in your esophagus. The only side effect is my skin is super sensitive to sunlight.

Pros:

cheapo, worked okay while it lasted

Cons:

not being able to eat food two hours before pill and 1 hour after sucks, can upset entire digestive balance for reals, did not last long, after two months it effectiveness waned big time

i was 15 when I started this in march 2007, I quit three months later, when I started accutane. Doxy took a few weeks for full effect, but instantly i felt results. Acne is a bacterial infection. Antibiotics fight this infection. Sounds good huh? No. Acne is a three front war: sebum production most importantly, bacterial growth, and pore blockage. Doxy should be used in conjuction with other meds like a topical retinA (adapalene), a topcial antibiotic like clindamycin, and maybe BP at night. This did work for me for awhile, I had 70% clear skin while on this medication (and others), I had mild acne on all this crap... unacceptable.:( Antibiotics are not meant for longterm, YOU WILL NEVER EVER EVER GET A LONGTERM FIX FROM AN ANTIBIOTIC LIKE DOXY. never. But it may be worth a try. Go to derm, it is the first step. After three months on this I switched to accutane, I am EXTREMELY happy i did. PERFECT SKIN!

Pros:

Can be taken with food
Works well for most
Affordable

Cons:

Scheduled diet
Antibiotics arent good long term
Not a permanent solution

Try it. Its cheap and can be used in conjunction with other things. Ive seen best results with consistent use of the three typical products; benzoyl, salicyclic and glycolic It doesnt work for everyone but give it time. Eat at least a little something and more importantly, plentyyy of water - if nothing else, remember, plenty of waterrr. Ive only gotten sick once from it and that was enough. Last thing, have your doctor fill it 100mg twice a day, quantity:180 - especially if you dont have insurance this will save you a lot

Pros:

Acne was gone within 1 week/ 100mg daily

Cons:

excess gas and some nausea/heartburn

It's been the solution to my adult onset acne I was looking for. At age 30 and suddenly having acne issues I was concerned. I tried proactiv, acne-free, etc nothing worked. I do reduce use to 1, 100mg pill every other day in the summer to avoid photosensivity. I use a mild benzoil face wash in the evenings and wear facial lotion (dryness can cause breakouts) during the day. This medication is on the $4 walmart pharmacy list.

Pros:

Cleared up the big, red cyst-like bumps

Cons:

Dries your face out like crazy
Still have baby bumps on forehead

Worth trying. Been on Doryx for almost 3 weeks. Had great skin all my life-then turned 30 and was breaking out all over jawline and sides of mouth/cheeks. Derm said it was hormonal and to try Doryx with Duac for spot/topical treatment. Duac does not do anything for me except bleach the hell out of my towels, but the Doryx seems to be working. Going to wait for my "monthly" friend to show up in two weeks to see if Doryx can keep the big cyst-like pimples away! So far so good though-definitely have to moisturize. It's very drying.

Pros:

We'll see! :)

Cons:

Little bit queasy after I take the pill, but thats to be expected. Otherwise, no cons so far.

This anti-biotic is mainly suppose to help people who have a particular STAPH INFECTION. I went in to see my doctor because at 23 yrs old I had a sudden horrible breakout of cystic acne all over my chin, jawline and cheeks (literally, about 9 pimples formed within three hours and it was PAINFUL). I thought something was wrong with me, but I kept using proactive as usual until my skin so so flaky and bumpy I went into depression. Anyway, my doctor looked at my skin and told me it was a skin infection, NOT regular adult acne. I was so happy that I was able to find a name for this. She perscribed my Doxy and informed me that it will help take away the bacteria/infection that I must have picked up from the gym or other public place. I have only been on it for a coouple days and I cannot wait to see the results. Remember, DOXY MAY ONLY WORK FOR PEOPLE WITH AN ACTUAL SKIN INFECTION. I have accepted my skin for now and learned so much about true inner beauty. Best wishes to yo

Pros:

Makes your skin feel really soft. Stopped deep, painful acne.

Cons:

Didn't clear up acne. Makes throat feel sore and tight. Upset stomach if no food in system.

I'm 22 and have had cystic acne pretty bad for the last year. I was told by my doctor that I should notice full results in 2 months. Well, it's been 2 months, and I guess it's a little better but not much. It seems that the pimples aren't as deep, but the ones I already have are not going anywhere. You're not supposed to eat with it as having calcium in your system will mess with the absorption, but you get a really queasy stomach if you don't have food in your system. It always made my throat feel slightly sore, and then as if I had a lump in it. Turns out that's a common system. Switched my BC to Yaz a week ago and it's clearing everything up.

Pros:

It's taken orally. I set a reminder on my phone. Every twelve hours. My face is looking better, still not perfect

Cons:

None that I can think of

If you do internet searches for acne cures like I did... don't! All the top selling, celebrity endorsed products were built on money. They're all junk. (Proactiv, Acnexis, just to name a few. I've tried them all... ALL!) I've been having breakouts consistantly for almost a year. I'm 26 years old, not cool. I went to a dermatologist twice. First go round, no success. Second time, four weeks ago, Doxycycline was perscribed to me. 200mg daily. No stomach pain No side effects at all This pill, plus a face wash at night (Benzoil Peroxide) is great. Retin-a micro also works wonders for small bumps. I've changed my diet too. consider cutting out caffine and most sugars. Eat a lot of apples. Good luck

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
