Pros:

Helped clear ALL cystic acne and those annoying clusters of small pimples on jawline and chin. I couldn't be happier :)

Cons:

Upset stomach if not eaten with food (or enough food)

I am 22 and had a sudden breakout to the point where my face actually hurt because I could feel the acne grow. I thought I was getting severe adult acne when my doctor told me I actually had a staph infection. She gave me this antibiotic and my skin cleared up better by the day until 3 weeks later my acne had vanished. I get small insignificant pimples around my period, but other than that all the cystic acne has not returned. This antibiotic may not work for everyone depending on their case of acne, but it is worth a try to see a doctor and perhaps, like me, you may have a clinical skin irritiation that can be releived by an antibiotic. Just be sure to take the doses as appropriatly needed and that you stick to it for as long as it recommends. I only used it for 3 weeks and stopped so I did't become immune to it. I know it is tough to go through a severe breakout, I couldnt look at myself in the mirror nor go out in public. Don't give up, and try to be confident in yourself. :)

Pros:

Clearer Skin

Cons:

It toog ages

Ive used these capsules for about 3 months now..I must say my skin looks much better and softer and it reduced all the spots and bumps. I take a 50 MG capsule one a day but I see people here that take a 100 mg capsule twice a day, could it be harmful if I take 50 mg twice a day?

Pros:

it was OK, made my acne reduce alot in size/shape and pimples were reduced in like a week. my acne areas don't hurt anymore and in general look MUCH HEALTHIER after taking this medication. my skin didn't dry out at all. it was more smooth than ever :

Cons:

take these on an empty stomach and you'll probably be vomiting like i did

go to your doctor and ask for a prescription. it's worth it coz you won't risk: - more acne scarring (eg. those irreversible ICE PICK scars, yuck?) - ur skin looks healthier and doesn't hurt to touch - don't need to waste more money on 'acne skincare regimens' etc etc. proactive, clearasil costs heaps - skin easier to manage *GET THIS. i didn't regret it..*

Pros:

clears skin after a while.

Cons:

bad nausea. i had vomiting after taking this pill when i hadnt had a big breakfast. anyone who takes this have it with a big breakfast (should be balanced and plentiful). also you get a BAD SUNBURN. very red, peeling, painful skin even with sunblock

give it a chance. it works best for moderate acne if you use it with a mild retinoid and a fairly strong (5 or 10%) benzoyl peroxide (i recommend clean & clear persa-gel). just be patient, in the morning EAT BREAKFAST, and WEAR SUNSCREEN. also, if you are like me and have very bad nausea side effects when taking this pill, i recommend the tablets (little and orange) more than the capsules (bright blue ones). the tablets wont upset your stomach as much. so... just be very conscious of the amount of time you spend in the sun (seriously - i play field hockey and had a game on a chilly november morning - on this pill and got bad burn), and be sure to eat a big breakfast. i found that if you take the pill AFTER there is food in your body, it is better. i have been on this pill for 6 months now and a few weeks ago my derm told me i can cut it to once a day instead of twice because my skin was so much better. so that proves that if you stick with it, it really will make a difference

Pros:

It seemed to clear up about 60% of my acne. I reduced the surface pimples and also had less of the big red ones.

Cons:

It didnt get rid of everything, and I still got the very incomspicuous big red ones every once in a while.

I still break out about once every three weeks. I think this could work if my skin were a little different.

Pros:

It clears up the majority of acne

Cons:

Not sure how long I have to take it.

I started taking this medication 6 months ago and am continuing to do so. I don't want to have any long term negative effects so I just recently started skipping and taking the pill every other day to see if the acne is going to start back up. Overall at first my acne got worse as if all of it was coming out and then in about 2 weeks they started to heal. My acne isn't completely gone, but im pleased with the overall effects. Also my doctor gives me a $50 off coupon, which is the price of my co pay so I get my medication for FREE!

Pros:

Improved acne very well

Cons:

Took a long time and didn't completely fix it, got worse before it got better, slow process

I was on a very low dose (50mg) of doxycycline. My acne improved slightly, then got worse. I kept taking the medication and then after 2 months I noticed my skin was a lot clearer. However there were still spots hiding under the skin and areas with pus, just less visible. I am now on a tougher antibiotic and birth control pills, but the doxycycline was a good start and I may go back to it because I still have some prescriptions. I am scared of the long-term effects of taking antibiotics though and also the rebound effect when I stop using it.

Pros:

It works. My large painful acne is completely gone.

Cons:

Some little acne still shows up.Sometimes all over my forehead.

It's cheap. It works. The only thing is I do not know how long I will be given a prescription for and I know the acne will come back if I stop taking it. I've been taking it for 4 months and I am waiting for my doctor to refill my prescription.

Pros:

Been on it for 2.5 weeks, so far so good. Cleared up the deep painful acne. Seems like smaller pimples heal faster.

Cons:

none.

Im using this in conjunction with Retin-A Micro. The Doxy seems to be helping with the infected pimples. Doc says it will take several more week for full effects.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
