Pros:

slowwwwww, may not even work for my type of acne

Cons:

takes too long to make a SLIGHT improvement if at all

I have had acne terribly ever since I was 16, I am 28 now. The ONLY thing that has worked for me is Accutane. It is very very strong though, during the first few days I took it I woke up itching everywhere and it dries out your face real bad, ESPECIALLY your lips, your lips will look and feel different. BUT IT WORKS EXTREMELY WELL, after 1 month of taking a pill every day you will see a HUGE difference. The government has tightened up restrictions on taking the drug, you have to get a blood test every month. Talk to your doctor about it, but if you have bad acne as I do that is the only thing your body will respond to, you have to fight tough with tough. Your doctor will put you on a 5 month treatment but the drug is so powerful I stopped after 1 month and now he doesn't want to prescribe it back to me, he gave me Doxycycline which does nothing for my acne. I actually argued with him and told him I wasn't ever coming back because he just wants me to keep paying the $40 copay for a medi

Pros:

*Works really well. *Will work as consitantly as you take it (excluding the first few days/week) *Easy to take (not large tablet) *Virtually no side affects.

Cons:

*Sunburn without sunscreen (slip slop slap)

I've been using this product for a few years and it has worked brilliantly, so long as it is taking consistantly and you're eating relatively well your pimples will appear virtually gone.

Pros:

In combination with Duac, almost completely cleared up my acne. You're supposed to take it with food, but it doesn't even bother me if I don't. No side effects so far.

Cons:

For one, it's an oral antibiotic, which is unsustainable for many reasons. It can seriously mess up your stomach, and cause resistant bacteria.

For two, it didn't work until I started using Duac too.

I take doxycycline 50mg/day. It didn't start to work until I began using Duac. So I can't be sure that the doxycycline is doing any of the work. The price I paid is a subsidised price, since I live in New Zealand. It may be astronomically more expensive in the States.

Pros:

* side effects are none existant
* tablets go down smooth
* went to the mornington peninsula and tanned like a motha, i know thats not a great thing health wise but im brown all the time lol

Cons:

nothing

aight ive been reading so many bloody reviews about people whinging about how if you dont take it with meals you feel sick and throw up. perhaps these people are stupid or just want to complain, but it says it ALL OVER the bottle "TAKE WITH A MEAL AND WATER"! my doctor even stressed to me that i should always take it with meals and i always have and ive never had nausa from it, ever. even just having a couple of dry biscuits is fine, just always take it with a big glass of water and youre sweet. so people before you go bagging a product, use it like its supposed to be used first. as for those people who are smart enough to take it properly, it works great. im using it with differin and together theyre the perfect treatment, but yeah ive had no side effects and more importantly, i now have no pimples.

Pros:

When I first started using this product just over a year ago my acne reacted well and I had many days with out my spots, which was great.

Cons:

I occasionaly had an upset stomach with these tablets.

Doxycycline was a good short term fix and I was greatfull of it at the time it was working, but like most things you become immune and then it is time to find something else, but it was good while it lasted.

Pros:

15 yr old son is taking 75 mg 1xday- 2 weeks now. Face and back really looking good. No side effects yet. Although is is winter - not alot of sun.

Cons:

I am concerned about extrinsic staining of his teeth. Was told he would not have this problem because of his age. But I did a search on the internet and saw a few cases of teeth staining in adults. Will be discussing this with our dentist.

Seems to be working great. In combination with Benzaclin and Tazorac. Worried about teeth staining with long term use. Check with your Dentist prior to use.

Pros:

I definately like it. I've been using it for 3 months and had to ask my derm to represcribe it because it was working. when I lowered the dosage though my skin broke out again.

Cons:

It does upset my stomach like everyone else when I take it on a completely empty stomach. Even though that's exactly what my prescription says to do. Since it's winter I haven't experienced the sun burn others mention.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with doxycline. It's helped alot.
January 3, 2008

Pros:

Hopefully it's improving my skin, hard to remember what I looked like before!

Cons:

Makes you vomit on an empty stomach, can't go in the sun

I've been back and forth on this medication for years (alternating with Monocycline in the summer) and I still get embarrassing breakouts. It's probably worth a try-- I think when I was put on doxycycline in middle school and high school it improved me a little. Then I went on accutane, was completely clear, and two years later I went back to the same 'ol acne. Due to the high side effects, my doctors never wanted me to go back on accutane, so I am 'stuck' on these lesser effective medications. I would say that it DOES improve acne, but definitely does not clear you up.
January 3, 2008

Pros:

broke me out progressively worse each day instead of improving my skin

Cons:

mild upset stomach, but otherwise I was able to tolerate the medication

Dosycycline didn't work for because I'm assuming that because I was on Minocycline for 4 years before I got on Doxy that I was already immune to the whole Tetracycline class (Doxy and Mino are in the same family). But my sister who took it a couple of years ago found that her skin was completely clear in 2 weeks until she broke out in hives and had to discontinue use

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
