Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit to only some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can sometimes reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

I have used this before and it was really good, it cleared my face but not my back.

Cons:

I am taking it again mainly for the acne on back and now i feel drowsey and have head aches , i also find i have hik-ups a lot more often as well. I just don't feel myself.

It's a good product to use, it works for some not others. It's better if you have the day and night cream as well. Different people have different side effects.

Pros:

Tetra. combined with the clear skin regimen cleared persistent moderate acne in a little over two weeks.

Cons:

It is a hassle to have to take it on an empty stomach. However, i dont know what's wrong w/ those people who are having stomach problems.

Used the clears skin regimen for 3 and 1/2 months before taking tetra. I am convinced that the CSR will not work alone. Received tetra a little over two weeks ago. 500mg (250mg did not work for me) twice a day along w/ CSR cleared my skin very quickly. Rememeber to not lie down for half an hour after taking the pill. I would recommend this to anyone w/ mild to moderate acne.

Pros:

No side affects

Cons:

-Self inflicted depression caused by low self-confidence
-No change what so ever
-The only thing that's worked is the prescribed creams

I've been using tetracycline for 2 months now and I haven't seen any results :( I had originally got the prescription from my family doctor for 2 pills (250mg) twice daily and then went to a dermatologist about a month after. He was surprised she gave me a high dosage even though all of the reviews say they start out with a high dosage and slowly decrease it. He made me stop doing it twice but instead have only 2 pills a day. He also prescribed two creams (an anti-bacteria face cream - 2 daily and a retinal - 1 daily) and the creams work wonders on my face! But I still get acne on my neck, shoulders, and back and there has been no change although I'm constantly be told by my dermatologist that tetracycline SHOULD be working. I still think if you don't have any other choice to give it a try. If my dermatologist allowed me I would have started accutane months ago! (I've had the blood test and got the okay from my doctor)

Pros:

None

Cons:

Did not help at all
Have to take with lots of food

It did nothing for me. I used it for about 3-4 months but I did not see any results at all. My acne did not clear at all so I stopped taking these pills. I still rate it with "2" because it did not make my acne worse as some other antibitics did.

Pros:

It's an antibiotic so you don't have to worry about as many diseases like strep but with acne just a small dent to the problem

Cons:

remembering to take it!!!!

I don't love it i don't hate it i just take it. I have taken it since May at first 2 pills a day one in the morning and one at night and now 4 a day 2 in the mornig 2 at night(what a pain!!!). I don't really think that it even makes a difference on my acne but with other products(Neutragena) my acne has improved but i am still afraid to stop taking it. Don't waste the money try something simpl like lemon or lime juice, vinigar, or Baking Soda

Pros:

Works really well until you stop taking it.

Cons:

I've been off it for about 2 months and now my acne is worse than when I started.

This works great until you stop taking it. I took it for about 6 months and my perscription ended about 2 months ago. I now have worse acne than when I started and just when I think my face is clearing up I break out again. I go to see my doc next week to get on Accutane which I should have just taken the advice and started right away.

Pros:

reduced amount of acne and breakouts. Not much deep acne

Cons:

does not clear the acne completly, it just reduces it

It's better than not being on it!

Pros:

Seems to be "reasonably" effective and in the uk its free if you are in full time education :D. Doesnt taste DREADFUL...like my last medication.. once you are into the routine of taking it an hour before and/or after food, its not bad at all.

Cons:

when i ran out..acne broke out again..quite severely..

Tetracycline seems to be like a long stick..poking an angry lion..

Go for it..if you feel you need it..but be prepared to work..

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
