Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit to only some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can sometimes reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Easy, Cheap

Cons:

None

Used with Retin-A micro and Benzaclin- 100% clear acne in a couple of months.

Pros:

Did a better job than minocycline. Better price for a month's supply ($4) vs. minocycline ($325)!!!!

Cons:

Long term use affects the immune system.

Added Saccharomyces boulardii (9 billion CPU) and Acidophilus (1 billion CPU)--- one of each once a day. Within two days, no more oily skin, no pustules or blackheads and deep-tissue zits are less painful. Hoping to wean off tetracycline and increase above probiotics. Google acidolphilus and acne and you'll be amazed! Why doctors don't recommend these as a treatment is the million-dollar question. Acidophilus and probiotic bacteria produce bacteriocins that are natural antibiotics that kill undesirable microorganisms.

Pros:

Doesnt remove redness and takes ages to work

Pros:

Since the moment i started taking it, iv never gotten another giant zit. also, hurry for candada, it was free.

Cons:

its an antibiotic so once you stop, it COULD all come back. also say goodbye to random snacks and eating whenever the hell you want. and farts smell extra bad haha

this stuff is great except for the timings around meals and snacks and the fact that once you stop, it could all go down the poop shoot. my face is alot better now and i hope it stays. if not, it'll be back to the Doc. also, i used clindoxyl gel with it and that is a great product too. check it out.

It cleared my skin up to the extent that I could go without concealer (still needed powder though), however not completely- didn't clear up my nose and upper cheek area. I stopped taking it about a month ago, after getting scared about yeast overgrowth and mutating bacteria and reasoning that it is probably better to have bad skin (moderate acne)than be taking a drug for possibly the rest of my life. My skin has got quite bad since, I did hope that it would stay clear, so I have resorted to medicated facial wash, etc, whereas I used to just use soap and moisturiser. It was very nice to not have to worry about my skin for a while...

Pros:

My initial course of Tetracycline completely cleared my mild/moderate acne problem. I saw a significant benefit by taking the drug for a good few years.

Cons:

After discontinuing these antibiotics my acne slowly began to creep back and seemed more agressive than before.

Tetracycline only seemed to offer a temporary solution for me. It can also upset the balance of gut bacteria by destroying a lot of the good stuff, so would always recommend a probiotic to counter act the damage.
May 15, 2008

Pros:

possible temporary self esteem boost due to clearer skin.

Cons:

extensive death of intestinal flora leading to reduction in natural metabolism of vital fatty acids, reduction of naturally microbe produced B vitamins, stunted growth, and open susceptibility to candida and other fungal infections.

don't take antibiotics to clear your acne: the high probability of extremely negative long term effects outweighs any negligible positive effects. this product makes you feel dizzy because you are becoming malnourished due to die off of important intestinal flora. probiotics, like PB8, are essential to recovery from antibiotic poisoning.
May 13, 2008

Pros:

Probably helped somewhat with my acne, but since I'm using 3 different things it's hard to tell

Cons:

Risk of antibiotic resistance, causes flat warts!!

I had flat warts around a year ago that went away on their own but tetracycline brought all of them back and more! Avoid oral antibiotics if at all possible, there are so many factors that you can't control!
April 12, 2008

Pros:

none for me

Cons:

When i started to take this i did notice no more breakouts but my skin remained the same. soon enough i started to realize i woul d break out into hives. Allergic reaction for me but it never did really anything to my skin to clear it up.

allergic reaction. Doesnt clear up just keeps under control
March 18, 2008

Pros:

It cleared up my mild acne in about three weeks

Cons:

After prolonged use it's effects started to fade and I had to double my daily prescription.
Need to plan around meals

Good for mild acne but effects wear over time and I have had to move on to something stronger

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
