Pros:

It cleared up my mild acne in about three weeks

Cons:

After prolonged use it's effects started to fade and I had to double my daily prescription.
Need to plan around meals

Good for mild acne but effects wear over time and I have had to move on to something stronger

Pros:

Perhaps if consistant you may see some results.

Cons:

Does not garuntee anything.

I have been using this perscription for a year or so and have seen almost no change in my skin. If anything, it makes things worse after you stop taking it. Such a scam, I feel very taken advantage from since I asked specifically for ACUTANE and the doctor insisted I "start" with this. Bullsh*t.

Pros:

I've been taking it for about 2 months now and it seems to be working however I'm still getting break outs during my menstrual cycle. What I don't like is that the break outs stay for awhile and doesn't go away fast.

Cons:

Plan around meals. Also dry skin but doctor recommended Vanicream.

I've yet to find out in the long run but feel pretty positive about it for the most part.

Pros:

It works! Cleared up my skin in about a month.

Cons:

Inconvenient- I have to schedule my meals around the meds. It makes me feel nauseous when I take it, so I have to have a piece of food anyway to calm my stomach.

I used it for about 3 months to get rid of an acne flair up- I've had acne for a long long time, but this was the worst it's ever been, so I got tetracycline. It took about a month for it to work, but when it started working, my acne cleared up a lot. I stopped using it since then, and noticed my chest breaking out. don't know if its cuz i stopped taking the med...

Pros:

It kept my cystic acne from getting to bad, although i still get the acne.

Cons:

Still get acne, Needs to be taken on empty stomaque, kills good bacteria

It kept acne down some, although I still get over my fair share of zits. I have been on 250mg twice a day for 3 months...so idk maybe i should have started off with 500mg a day till my face was clear. Bottom line is that for me it didn't do a whole lot, but it does help a little.

Pros:

Very effective, completely clear skin in 3 weeks

Cons:

Kills good bacteria as well as acne bacteria

I used a tetracycline based product for Acne, prescribed by my doctor. I had mild/moderate acne. My skin was completely clear in 2/3 weeks and has remained so. Antibacterial products screw up your immune system if you use them over the long term. Good bacteria reside in your body, that have a beneficial effect. I reccomend using a supplement of probiotic yoghurt, or something similar to replace the good bacteria. I take the supplement a few hours after using the antibiotics.

Pros:

Eliminated cystic acne on back, and mild acne on face

Cons:

nausea, dry skin on rest of body, birth control not effective

I am not sure whether the change in my skin is due solely to this product, because I started taking oral birth control at about a month before I started. I use ortho tri-cycline lo, and they have yet to study whether it effects acne. Also, i have eczema, so the dry skin is an issue. I'm not sure whether that is a common side effect though. I can no longer drink coffee and some sodas because the medicine has made my stomach so sensitive that they make me sick. Other than that, the acne on my back and face has been completely eliminated. I am nervous about going off of the medication because it sometimes comes back. And I am also nervous about the summer because sunscreen irritated my skin, but i am willing to take all of these side effects and risks because my skin is clear. bottom line.
February 27, 2008

Pros:

still waiting for my skin to clear up

Cons:

have to take on an empty stomach

took it before and it cleared up my skin
February 26, 2008

Pros:

Cleared my acne up in a week

Cons:

I am worried about the long-term outlook

I am taking Doryx, a brand of Doxycycline every 12 hours (at a dosage of 100mg). I have been really happy with the results, because my face has dramatically improved in a very short time. However, I really do not like having to depend on antibiotics to clear my skin because I know taking them for the rest of my life (or for a few years, for that matter) is not possible. I plan to take my prescription for the next few months and wean myself off in conjunction with encouraging the growth of healthy flora in my digestive system with probiotics and maintaining a healthy diet.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
