Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit to only some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can sometimes reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

started taking it around 2 weeks ago. Have noticed slight difference in the redness of my acne. Really hope it should start dissapearing in a month. free on NHS

Cons:

Very hard to fit into practical scheduale.

I realised this morning that you're not supossed to take it with food which makes me feel like the last three weeks might have been pointless. Ive started a new pattern from tonight, so hopefully i'll get full benefits from it

Pros:

For me none, but my cousin went on it and it really helped her so i guess its partly luck . . .

Cons:

as you have to take it two hours after eating then eat two hours after taking it it was a pain up the a**e to organise, also you can't take vitamin/mineral pills with it so i had to stop taking my calcium and zinc tablets :(

As soon as i stopped taking it all my spots came back even worse than before, can't comment on afordability as i got it on the NHS. I didn't get any side affects.

I just started the pill 6 days ago, and it seems to be slowing down on the acne break outs. Every night as I lay in bed I get a gassy feeling in my stomach and my lower abdomen bloats out. I guess I will see as the weeks go on if it goes away.

Pros:

It kept my cystic acne from getting to bad, although i still get the acne.

Cons:

Still get acne, Needs to be taken on empty stomaque, kills good bacteria

It kept acne down some, although I still get over my fair share of zits. I have been on 250mg twice a day for 3 months...so idk maybe i should have started off with 500mg a day till my face was clear. Bottom line is that for me it didn't do a whole lot, but it does help a little.

Pros:

Cleared my acne up in a week

Cons:

I am worried about the long-term outlook

I am taking Doryx, a brand of Doxycycline every 12 hours (at a dosage of 100mg). I have been really happy with the results, because my face has dramatically improved in a very short time. However, I really do not like having to depend on antibiotics to clear my skin because I know taking them for the rest of my life (or for a few years, for that matter) is not possible. I plan to take my prescription for the next few months and wean myself off in conjunction with encouraging the growth of healthy flora in my digestive system with probiotics and maintaining a healthy diet.

Pros:

Works great, have seen big improvement on my moderate facial acne!

Cons:

Must take on empty stomach, which upsets my tummy and also has made me have less of an appetite, but other than that...Great Product!

I have been struggling with moderate cystic on my chin for about 5 years now (so frustrating!) I have used every acne-wash on the market and nothing ever worked, there was only irritation and more breakouts...I was also taking Erythromycin tablets but they did little for me (I think because of the low dosage)Now I'm taking Tetracycline and it's doing great so far..the acne on my chin has improved so much within a few weeks!!! I hope it continues to fight for me!!! Now I must care for the scarring, but hey if you've got some foundation that won't irritate your skin, then you're okay. The best bet is to let scarring heal naturally because u dont wanna start adding other medications that may irritate your skin and trigger acne all over again!!! Works great!

Pros:

Worked quicker than I thought, cheap too

Cons:

Messes up your eating schedule

My derm prescribed this to me with retin-a micro and boy did it work. The month after I came back to her office and my acne %90 gone. I have a lot of acne scarring to get over still but it's pretty wonderful. It does make you kind of pukey after taking but it's not too bad.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
