Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

Smells nice.

Cons:

Doesn't help with acne and completely dried out my skin. My face is red, itchy, and irritated.

Horrible product. Didn't work for me at all.

Pros:

gentle on skin, smells ok

Cons:

did NOT clear up my body acne

a lot of people say it works, and i'm sure it did for them. a lot of people have different type of acne, and everyone's bodies work differently, therefore, not a product may work for one person, but not necessarily for others. sadly, i was one of those unlucky people who paid $40 for it and got no results. just because it didn't work for me, i'm going to recommend a no, but its really a maybe for my aforementioned reasons.

Pros:

smells great, very light, cooling sensation

Cons:

can sting a little if you put too much on, didn't really help with my pimples

Pros:

Smells good.

Cons:

I have very mild acne problems, so mild I wouldn't technically consider it acne, just occasional pimples. I started using the Outer Peace line about 3 months ago and my skin has actually gotten slightly worse. I have had at least one pimple since I have been using it. I am switching to Exposed Skin Care line.

It is too expensive and I do not think it works well for acne.

ITS WIERD MY TZONES WENT CLEAR THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY FOREHEAD STARTED BREAKING OUT! I STOPPED USING IT AFTER THAT!

Pros:

I was using the regular proactive and it was great except little drying. I used it for two weeks it felt and made my skin look great.

Cons:

After two weeks it made my skin worse than ever. I went back to regular proactive for about two weeks know and it's not working for me anymore. I'm very depressed and regreat ever changing my routine.

Don't buy it!

Pros:

it made my cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead much smoother

Cons:

after first using it, i had like HORRIBLE wrinkley lines under my eyes.. I'm only 16. It was disgusting. Don't put it under your eyes or on them.

DON'T PUT THIS ON YOUR EYES OR IT WILL MAKE THEM SAGGY lol

Pros:

The smell is very clean, and not harsh like other astringents. It leaves your skin feeling fresh.

Cons:

It actually worsened my acne problems. I don't have whiteheads but I do have skin colored bumps on my forehead. My skin was clear before I used this product, but when I began to use it, my skin gradually became more bumpy. =(

Don't buy this product unless you're using the entire Biore facial system and if you're skin is oily. If you're like me and you breakout along the forehead often then I recommend Neutrogena because that was I used before I tried this product. The price is also more inconvenient compared to Neutrogena.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
