Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Feels like someone is throwing acid in your face, smells like formaldehyde, and made the sensitive skin around my mouth and eyes red and flakey- don't know if that has anything to do with the product, but I've noticed a few others have said the same.

Don't bother.

Pros:

not sure of them yet.

Cons:

it burns like crazy!!! i havent seen any difference in my face yet either

my face just hurts because of this product.

Pros:

it works real well by taming down the acne but it also somehow made my pores huge. I suppose it's better than having red marks all over my face but that's about all it does.

Cons:

moisturizer dries out to become really flaky sometimes and also will fix part of the problem, not all of it.

I'll still use it because it's done more for my acne than proactive and murad, and it's cheaper still.

Pros:

Works fast and very well. Affordable.

I do not have terrible skin, but it is very sensitive, and everything makes me break out. I've tried all of the products out there, proactive, arcona, epicuren, and every drug store product there is, but nothing seemed to treat my breakouts. Some things made my skin look better, but I still got zits. This one worked in a day or two, clearing my skin, and preventing new breakouts! It is slightly drying at first, but then my skin got used to it and an extra moisturizer helps.

Pros:

I LOVE this product...I am soooo mad that it has been discontinued. I used all three steps and it was a miracle worker.

Cons:

I think it is available now under AcneResponse...but it is horrible because you have to buy all three (cleanser, toner, moisturizer) at the same time...nobody runs out of all three at the same time.

Everyone who is unhappy about this product being discontinued should email/send a letter to L'oreal expressing their concern.

Pros:

fades marks and controls acne

Cons:

wish it were stonger

it doesnt sting and it doesnt dry me out. i use it every other night (i use the advanced solutions peel on opposite nights)- its helped reduce my marks and clear my breakouts a lot. i wish it were stronger though! and the smell i don't even notice. try using it every night for a week after you wash your face at night and see if you notice a difference. it never irritated my skin at all. leave it on for about a half hour too (i leave it on until when i move my mouth it peels all over)

Pros:

Leaves your skin feeling refreshed and smooth, helps clear up some break outs and clear some black heads as well.

Cons:

I haven't run into any yet.

It's worth the price.

Pros:

I love love love this 3 step program. I had adult acne and this program is the only thing that has helped. I have tried so many others since this became hard to find in stores and nothing works but Pure Zone.

Cons:

Hard to find

Anytime I find it I buy several months supply.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
