Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

Gets rid of acne pretty quickly. Continues to keep my face fairly clear.

Cons:

Dries out face. Still break out a little, but not much.

I have been using the 3 step system: the cleanser, toner and moisturizer. I have naturally dry skin so it does dry it out pretty bad. The first week I started using it, it seemed like my face almost got worse, but it was bringing out the stuff deep inside my pores. I would say after 3 weeks, I noticed I had less acne. So far it's the first thing I have used that seems to actually work. I do break out occasionally but nothing drastic. Just a couple on my chin mostly. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the product. It does dry my skin out though. I might try just a basic cleanser in the morning instead, so it's not as harsh with the acne medication.

Pros:

I use the whole advantage kit. It starts working on the first day! Its affordable and available anywhere!

Cons:

I live in a very dry place so i have very dry skin everywhere, but this doesn't dry my skin out too much as long as i use clearasil sensitive skin lotion with it.

Nothing has ever worked for me. I've tried everything from proactive to fasting. Six months ago, I prayed very hard that God would show me the right skin treatment to clear up my embarrassing acne. As I was walking through Walmart, I found your Clean and Clear Acne Advantage and couldn't believe it was bold enough to give a 100% guarantee! I bought it partly to see if this was what God wanted me to use and partly to prove the statement wrong. The first day I noticed my skin clearing up, and by the second month my skin was almost completely clear!! My skin has been completely clear (with the exception of a minor pimple here and there) for six months! I wanted to let everyone know that God has used this to answer my prayers! I am recommending this product to everyone and praising JESUS CHRIST for the amazing miracle! It took 2 months to get fully clear so stick with it! its worth it!

Pros:

Cleared up my skin within the first few days. The first product I found that my skin actually responds to.

Cons:

When I stopped using it, my skin had a negative reaction almost immediately. I think it grew dependent on the medicine in the cleanser.

It works really well, its inexpensive, and your skin is very responsive. I use it every day, twice a day and it really makes me feel great and exfoliated.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
