Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

GREAT exfoliator, i tend to mix it with other scrubs that dont have enough 'beads'

Cons:

really harsh or your skin, and it doesnt really help clear acne all that much =[

if you DO use this, make sure you dont use it too often x] cuz it gives your skin 'micro-cuts'

Pros:

Immediate results

Cons:

None that I really could put my finger on... Maybe the branding could be better... Cuz I keep forgeting the name so that I can tell my friends.

I had what I thought was a bug bite because I haven't had acne for years... it wouldn't go away and started looking more like a pimple so I stood at the acne section in the store and pretty much picked the product that said... overnight results... It wasn't the cheapest product on the shelf nor was it the most expensive. I could not believe it. In less than two days it had totally disappeared. It made me want to tell everyone to try it! Now it's up there with my hiccup cure! Swallow a spoonful of sugar without tasting it. Sure cure! I promise!

Pros:

It makes your face feel clean

Cons:

It made me break out more and my face red

My face felt clean after using it but I guess it didn't mean anything. During my first wash it made my skin red but the redness dissapear in a few seconds. I had high expectation for this product. It made me break out more and does not help for any reason. I am very dissapointed since it worked for so many others.

Pros:

affordable and can be a great body scrub.
[[yeah i like to use it on my body instead =)]]

Cons:

doesn't smell as good as other blackhead scrubs do, and i still had plenty of blackheads on my nose after using it for a while. and there were too many beads.

i wouldn't buy it if you had really severe blackheads, only if you have a couple.

Pros:

it works really well to make your skin soft and clear! it keeps working over time and doesn't dry it out or make it too oily. it clears up your acne within 2 weeks so you need to give it time. if it is used just once a week it works too!

Cons:

i personally don't like the type of packaging it comes in, but i gues i am just a clumsy person in the shower!

i recommend this product to everyone i know who is struggling with acne! it is discontinued,so get it while you can! you can now basically only find it at [link removed]

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
