Pros:

I believe it kept my acne under control for a little bit

Cons:

Made me feel sick sometimes (headaches)

I have almost been on this for 3 months and my acne has not cleared! If you have mild acne this would probably work.

Pros:

Improves skin problems, cost almost nothing because of insurance

Cons:

Gave me 'bacne,' migraines, nausea every day, skins problems come back when you go off of it, way more expensive than other antibiotics if you don't have insurance

I think this works for some people, and it actually did improve my skin a lot. I have perioral dermatitis, not acne, but it's improved by all the same medications. I stay on minocycline for about a year because it kept my skin ALMOST under control. It got rid of my derm once and I went off it a month later but a month after that it all came back. My mom has been on this for years and years. It's so bad for you and your skin becomes 'addicted to it.' It also made me really sick and made my back break out even though it helped my face. (I've never had acne there before.) I'm trying accutane now I hope it works!! I've been off of minocycline for a week now and my nausea and head pain alleviated almost instantly.

Pros:

I used this in college for two months and it cleared up my mild acne beautifully.

Cons:

I've gone back to minocycline after getting moderate to severe breakouts after pregnancy. This is month two and I'm not seeing the same results as I did a few years ago. Side effects include headaches and yeast infection

I tried doxycycline without any positive results so I'm back on the minocycline. I'm eager for it to work so I have been consistent but the side effects are a real deterent. I'm also using this product along with BP gel and it has been really helpful.

Pros:

Affordable

Cons:

Hard to remember to take sometimes untill you get into the habit, but that's how it goes with anything

I didn't respond very effectively to Monocycline. It did reduce my acne a bit, but I never got clear from it. I changed to Amoxicillin by recommendation of my dermatologist and it's orking better for me right now. He said people who usually don't respond well to Monocycline do better with Amoxicillin (sp?).

Pros:

decent at getting rid of acne, i had been on other acne meds from my dermotologist and they started to have dulled effects so he switched me, it seemed my skin had a better tone and scars went away quicker.

Cons:

While taking this medicine i has headaches everynight, after about a month i got intensely sick and started having piercing headaches, blurred vision, and vomiting for almost 4 days. after getting it out of my system im much better.

If you start getting headaches or weird vision stop immediatly

Pros:

It treats achne.

Cons:

Just for heads up, this product does not work nearly as well for girls. Males are a lot less likely to experience any side effects.

Give it a try, but be careful, especially for girls.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
