Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Works pretty well, no bad side effects as of yet.

Cons:

Expensive! I hope you have insurance or your derm gives you one of the card/coupon things.

I'm currently starting my second go around of this medication. The first time I think had a lesser dosage, now I'm on the 90mg a day capsules. It seems to be working. I haven't had any bad breakouts since I started taking it. A couple pimples here and there, but nothing crazy. The first time I got prescribed this the derm gave me a coupon for 50 off which was nice, this time around they were out and even with insurance I paid 90. The pharmacist told me that without insurance it's right around 500. I'm not totally sure it's worth that price.

Pros:

No new breakouts.

Cons:

none

I was actually surprised that it reduced my acne. I was actually clear for a short while, cause I ran out. I remember looking in the mirror and noticing I look better and no new acne marks.

Serious Vertigo (dizziness). Luckily it stopped soon after I stopped taking it

I didn't notice any improvement in my skin, it just made me so dizzy and maybe even a little psychotic(?)!

Pros:

no pros at all

Cons:

actually makes acne worse, and induces uncontrollable vomiting

do not get this product is my opinion but it seems to have worked for some people all it did was make my acne ten times worse, and horrifically gave me about 5 painful cysts on my face, particullarly my ears and nose

RASH, HIVES, WORSE ACNE

My son is 14 & was put on Miocycline for body acne. After the first week he was complaining that the acne was getting worse & I told him to just wait it out & that sometimes it will get worse before it gets better. Boy was I wrong! He has now been on this for 3 weeks & I got a call today from the school nurse to come pick him up because he has a terrible rash all over him. I couldn't believe what I saw. He has welts all over his back & arms. It itches him too, & these things have formed over top of everywhere he had a pimple. If he even touches his skin one will form. They are white raised welts with a red rash around them. When I spoke to the doctors office they said it sounds like an allergic reaction to the medicine. So 3 weeks on this stuff & this is the result. I feel terrible for him because something that was suppose to help his acne actually made it 10 times worse! Do some research before getting on this medication.

Pros:

got rid of most of my acne!

Cons:

not eating before/after the dose

This medicine took a few months to start working, but once it did, it was great. I do not have much acne anymore, and i barely get large pimples. And if I do get a large pimple, it heals really quickly!

Pros:

I've yet to find any pros.

Cons:

It's just not working. I've been on it 2 months. My skin wasn't that bad to begin with--I probably shouldn't have taken pills.

BE VERY CAREFUL before you agree to take pills. I'm about at my wits end. I've been using it 2 months, but after my first script, I was out of town and went a day or so without refill. BAD IDEA. DO NOT SKIP DOSE OR YOUR FACE WILL EXPLODE. It took me a few weeks to recover from that, now all the sudden my face has exploded again for no reason. I don't know what to do. If this stuff doesn't start working in the next month, I'm getting on accutane.

Cons:

Gave me a rash after about 2 weeks of use. Later had swelling of face and rash all over body. Was sent to E.R and had to get steroid and antihistamine shot

I was allergic to minocycline and didn't know it. I had to give it a shot to clear up my acne.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
