Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

did clear up some spots and my skin seemed less greasy

Cons:

dont know if it was the minocycline or not but i got skin discolouration on the back of my neck but it wasnt terribeley noticeable

if it hadnt been for the discolouration i would have continued using it as i think with longer use it could have worked quite well as it cleared up some larger spots

Pros:

Doctor gave me a rebate card so it cost me only 10 bucks.

Cons:

VERY expensive if you do not have rebate card. I found it did nothing.

My derm told me to use solodyn for max 3 months. I did and am now off. I feel it did not clear up my skin at all. Not sure if I should ask her to continue to use it past 3 months. Maybe it takes longer than I think to see results.

Pros:

I don't feel nausious, (I drank a lot of water with it) and no headaches. I've only been on it for a day, so I'll see what happens. My skin isn't drying out.

Cons:

None so far.

I'm just going to see how it works. I've read a lot and people said it works, but I'm also using other topical medications with it, so maybe it will work a little differently.

Pros:

Worked for a few weeks. The acne came back after a month or so, but not as severe as before.

Cons:

I didn't get any significant side effect... other than occasional nausea and appetite loss.

I've tried EVERYTHING... but still looking.

Pros:

Not breaking out as much as I had been.

Cons:

A bit of depression and I'm not one to be depressed.

Would recommend minocyclene over accutane because of the side effects of accutane. My dermatologists also has me using Tazorac, which he describes as liquid sand paper. Has helped smooth out my skin. Now contending with the hyperpigmentation (dark spots) from the acne.

Pros:

reduces little acne, after about 6-8 weeks but does not cure it. i recommend accutane which my brother used for cystic acne and worked tramendously.

Cons:

redness, some dry skin, about fifth week in i started to break out

get accutane there is more assurance on clearing up your face with accutane rather than minocycline.

I was a little drowsy the first week on this medicine I have my face clean just with some red marks from acne but they are healing away my problem is that I still have acne in my back, chest, arms. So my derm wants me to go on accutane next week..

This medicine might work for some people, but like I said it helps alot to my face but my chest, back and arms are kinda the same they have just improve a little so my dr says to go on accutane next week... I thought alot about it... and Im doing it.. Hopefully all works great

Pros:

Completely cleared acne

Cons:

Once in awhile would experience dizziness and would be sick to stomach

This product was my saving grace. I started this medication when I was 23 and continued to take it for 3 years. My skin cleared up entirely. I found a new Dr. and was told I shouldn't be on this drug for that long so I stopped and Acne has reappeared. So now I am back to square one trying to figure out something else that works. But I would recommend this product to anyone where everything else has failed them.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
