Pros:

inexpensive. Worked at first...

Cons:

Now I'm in my second month of taking the mino daily and I'm breaking out much worse than before! I am wondering if this is a one time last breakout or if this is not the drug for me.

I need to go back to my dermatologist.

Pros:

Cons:

no change so far

Pros:

Cleared up my acne really fast!

Cons:

-Cant eat after i take it :(
no more night time food
-Slight nausea, no biggie

Ive been on minocycline for a week now and the results are crazy! My entire chin has cleared up so much and now i just have red marks. A few little zits here and there, but nothing unmanageable, not like the deep lumps before. I am also using differin 0.1 gel (night) aswell as a 5% benzyl peroxide wash in conjunction with the antibiotic... Also important to refuel your biotic cultures, so drink a Bio-K or asidophilus every other day

Pros:

Stops more severe acne, and helps with acne that is "deep" under the skin

Cons:

Does not clear you up completely

I took minocycline for the 6 months that my doctor prescribed it to me and i hated it. I thought it did absolutely nothing. I recently went back on it because my parents said I really should and that it had helped before. This time i made sure I took notice and after only a week my face is a whole lot better. This stuff does not clear up the moderate acne that the regimen is designed to combat, but by combining them I am having great successes. After a week my face is 50% better, and I really don't expect the minocycline to do anything more than it has already done, but I do expect it to keep working to combat the tougher acne that the regimen just cant handle. Really I would suggest this as an option to people who's acne is just a little bit too severe for the regimen, so that it can handle what the regimen can't and then by combining them you should get clear.

Pros:

Works for the first few weeks
No side effects at all (except for the acne!)

Cons:

Stops working
You can not stay on this forever - it is not healthy at all to take antibiotics for prolonged periods

It definitely worked to begin with but I think my skin became resistant. It was very strange - it certainly helped to prevent large, cystic pimples form forming, any that did form were small and disappeared very quickly. However, about 6 weeks in I started having very persistant breakouts in places that I never usually breakout. Ever. There was literally nothing I could do get rid of these breakouts. As soon as I stopped taking it my skin cleared up very quickly. A month or so on and it is starting to break out again in the same places it did with minocylcin. I blame the minocyclin for this. I am breaking out on my forehead and have not done so for about 15 years. Still very glad to be off it! Will look elsewhere for remedies. I say give it a shot as it seems to work for some people but for me it was definitely not a miracle cure and I'd say my skin eventually became much worse on it.

Pros:

My son is 17 and has been on Minocycline since April. His acne has cleared up and I'm happy about it. He will forget to take it from time to time and I can tell because he will have one or two break outs.

Cons:

So far, I have not seen anything negative from him taking Minocycline. It does say do not take it within one hour of having dairy products or being in the sun for a long time, my son does both and I did not notice any side effects.

Minocycline works for my son. I just don't know how long he will have to stay on the medication. I have had 2 refills already, but I will not get anymore unless I take him to the doctor.

Pros:

no new breakouts once i started this treatment. Cleared up in about 2 weeks!

Cons:

None really

I started taking minocycline after a reaction to my birth control which made me break out. AHH it was horrible. I started taking minocycline beginning of july and just finished this past week and i can't complain about it. I have post-inflammatory red marks from old breakouts but those eventually fade with time and with the Murad post acne fade gel I purchased. I hadn't had a break out until the end of september where i got one or two little ones but not like the huge ones i used to get. I recommend it, it's worth a shot. Now I'm on doxycycline even though i'm not sure why the doctor switched my medication...we'll see how it goes.

Pros:

Reduced Inflammation
Reduced Redness
Reduced Severity of Outbreaks

Cons:

Did Not Stop Outbreaks

Overall its a antibiotic worth trying it reacts with people in different ways, what doesn't help some might be a fix to others. I only took it for a month and maybe I didnt see its full benefits. Saying this though I used Epiduo gel along with monocylcine.

Pros:

So far so good only on day 3 but I've been doing my birth control and differn .3 and my face is smooth except for 1 bump that is almost gone on my cheek. I have not gotten ill or anything on mino. Hopefully when next month comes around ill be okay

Cons:

Nothing.

I wanted to prevent my monthly cycle break outs that consisted of cyctic acne all over my chin and jawline so I went on birthcontrol, Yaz, for about 2 months and it cleared me up but still would get a few break outs on my chin and jawline so went to derm and she reccomnded mino and difern, so far so good now I can work on getting rid of all this scaring from my past break out. Id deff say gve it a try and see if it works for you. Oh my derm put me on two 100mg pills a day to start off with. Ill update in a weekor so. I started off with moderate acne before going on my birth control now with the differin and mino I only have one bump that is practically gone.

Pros:

I believe it kept my acne under control for a little bit

Cons:

Made me feel sick sometimes (headaches)

I have almost been on this for 3 months and my acne has not cleared! If you have mild acne this would probably work.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
