Pros:

At some point, all of my acne was gone (except the black/white heads)

Cons:

Does not get rid of white/black heads. also, while on this medication, I got about 4 yeast infections. I vomited about every other day. It took about 3 months until I was satisfied. I got a weird un-common reation: skinned started to turn blue

Mynocycline was great! i highly recomend it. I am a 16 year old teen, and both my parents had acne, so i had terrible acne! Then i started taking this. I took 100 mg twice a day... my doc wanted to only put me on 50 mg twice a day, since i weigh a small 110 lbs, but she luckily let me be on more :). i wasnt satisfied until about 3 months. after 6 months my prescription ran out (and i broke out right away!), so i had to goto the doc to get more. there, my doc noticed that i was starting an un commmon side effect- my skin was turning BLUE! i was wondering y my brusies wouldnt go away.. haha. so i had to get off it and was put on Doxycline... Hope it works as great as menocycline did! BTW I WASNT ON FOR A YEAR... JUST 6 MONTHS BUT THEY DIDNT HAVE A 6 MONTHS USAGE THING TO CHOOSE FROM ON THIS SITE SO I PUT 1 YEAR

Pros:

Cheap, not as intense as accutane.

Cons:

Have to take 2 pills at a time. (NOT THAT BAD!!! Come on!)

Doctor gave it to me because he said I'm too old for accutane now (I'm 20). I got a three month bottle through my mail order insurance pharmacy. It's been cutting down on my severe oil (I have to wash my pillowcase about twice a week) but the acne is still there. I'm not getting off of it because it HAS dried me out!

Pros:

It works if you take it regularly (don't skip)

Cons:

Makes me sick to my stomach if not taken with a substantial meal. Rebound effect (acne gets worse by 10X once therapy is discontinued)

I have a love/hate relationship with this pill. I did a year on this drug back in 2006. I took 100mg twice a day. If you don't take it with food, you will vomit which defeats the purpose of taking it. It took a solid 2 months of consistent use before I saw results, so don't give up on this drug! It was great for the last 9 months. I suffered from moderate cystic acne on my face and a little bit on my back. This pill made it so I got one or two hormonal zits during my cycle. After one year, my doctor wouldn't refill for another year until I came in for a exam. I didn't get to it for six months. For me, there was a terrible rebound effect. I broke out with every kind of zit all over my face, back, neck and chest. I looked horrible. I wanted to cry. It took four months for my skin to calm down a little. I am not a candidate for accutane at this time, so now I am two weeks into my second course. I've tried many OTC and none works like this pill.

Pros:

I'm pretty sure its working its way with my Differin gel.

Cons:

None

No breakouts

Pros:

it definitely cleared up my face

Cons:

I developed pseudotumor cerebri

I totally loved taking this at first, because it did clear up my skin, but within a few weeks of taking it I developed strong headaches. I didn't think it had anything to do with the medicine, so I shrugged it off. The headaches became so strong that I was admitted to the emergency room, and my nuerologist came to the conclusion that I had pseudotumor cerebri or idiopathic intracranial hypertension, which is too much fluid surrounding your brain and spinal courd, which in the long run, could cause me permanent eye damage. But, as an acne medication, it worked really well!

Pros:

This is for Minocin capsules: works well.

Cons:

Extreme headache and nausea. I never had this side effect with MinoTabs, which I had from a different country.

Why can't I get the MinoTabs in Italy? Compositionally-wise, I don't know why they suit me better than the capsules...

Pros:

I have found it is working. Not as well i i would like. But it is still working.

Cons:

THis medicine is supposed to take a couple of months to start working, so if it has not started it should in a month or so.

works well no side affects other than aches and pains

Pros:

cleared up my acne in about 2 weeks

Cons:

none so far

when i used this product i also was using benzaclin cream as well as cetaphil antibacterial soap. i used to soap to wash my face 3x a day and i would apply the benzalin 2x a day. the soap works great. it clears up all oil and decreases blackheads. i think the reason why my acne is gone is because i used all three products together
February 10, 2008

Pros:

I could see some difference in the amount of pimples i had. Used it for over a month so far.

Cons:

Still get breakouts on the sides of my face, and am now trying retin A combined with it.

It DOES work some, just give it time, and let the old acne scars heal.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
