Pros:

I was instructed to take it for 7-10 days when I became aware of the cystic acne forming under the skin, then discontinue use when skin clears. The med can stop the acne in its tracks and prevent the pock marks that sometimes go along with it.

Cons:

About two weeks after discontinuing use I usually get hive break outs intermittently for about 6 weeks until drug clears the system.

Good for occassional use to treat acne when it arises, but would not recommend long term use or taking when acne is not present.

Pros:

Cleared up acne in a couple days. Kept my skin from getting so oily and I couldn't make my skin break out if i tried!! I stopped taking it for a while and did break out but only in small amounts. No giant pimples again.

Cons:

I had no bad side effects. Its just expensive if you don't have insurance.

Cant wait to get it refilled!

Pros:

Easy to take. I only take it in the morning and before bed.50 mg, 2x a day...and my insurance paid for it. No tummy pains for me.

Cons:

Takes a while to work but worth it.

I have tried almost everything to clear up my acne. I got minocycline 50 mg 2x a day. I have been using it for 3 months (finished my 3rd bottle today). The first 2 months, I would still get breakouts, but they weren't as bad as before (puss..ewww) I would use Stievamycin medium strength to kill the acne and it helps b/c the acne gets smaller one day after applying and it doesn't hurt as much. Today, was the first time in years that I didn't have a breakout. I only had one breakout during my period but it was a tiny one! I think the key is being consistent. I used Tersaseptic to wash my face too!...

Pros:

no side effects whatsoever, using them after oxytetracycline had no effect
seems to have stop any major breakouts about my jawline where i got them most frequently and has significantly cleared up the acne on my back,

Cons:

im using this with a topical benzoyl peroxide cream which although is trying up my skin a bit, seems to be helping too, i dunno if the benefits are due to the minocycline or the topical cream,

ive only used this for about a week and a half, so in all likleyhood they havn't really done their job yet, so ill just have to wait and see. Free on prescription

Pros:

My back acne is gone and my facial acne is significantly better, but I am also using the topical drug BenzaClin and I think that is working very well also. I am 42 years old and have suffered my whole adult life with acne.

Cons:

It does make you feel rather nausiated. My Dr. suggested I try 1 a day to get used to it. I did with no effects so I tried 2 and got grounded. I quickly went back to 1, and am still on 1.

It works if you have acne that is treatable with antibiotics, but may not be worth the side effects. I'm considering going off of it and just using the topical BenzaClin.

Pros:

It worked good for me, stopped new cyst from forming

Cons:

After the initial breakout, mino brings out the cysts that were currently being formed under the skin which is normal but still a con. It did not cure my acne but kept it a bay as long as I was taking it.. Plus you can't take with calcium

It kept my acne at bay but did not cure it, I am currently weining off of this to see if it will cure my acne this time around..
August 24, 2008

Pros:

it does help prevent more pimples from forming. but it does'nt seem to be making them go away.

Cons:

ringing in the ears. you start to feel more tired all the time. i doesnt really help to make the pimples go away

It will stop your acne from forming to a certian degree but it doesnt seem to make them completely go away.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
