Pros:

I went on Minocycline 2 seperate times about a year apart, the first time it kept my skin almost completely clear for about 3 months, then stopped working, so i decided to stop taking it. Next time i took it it worked better than the previous time.

Cons:

I had to stop taking it again even though it was still working. I developed purplish-blue pigmentation on my tongue that is apparently extremely rare, my derm says shes really never seen it happen. it can spread to your face and become permanent.

Seems I can tolerate this antibiotic for a few months at a time before it stops working or something weird happens. I was really disappointed the second time because it was still working great when I noticed the tongue spots. Also maybe of note, I felt a little "under the weather" while taking this med; not healthy...just kind of drained. I cannot be sure this was a result of the minocycline, however. I guess minocycline is kind of hit or miss, try it and see what happens.

Pros:

Works somewhat initally

Cons:

Made acne worse..new spots which where nt many but when they did come they where deep red and long lasting..seemed to make me tired and sleep bad..not sure if the drug caused this or coincidence..anyway after 3 months have stopped taking them..

A false dawn, wasted 3months when could've been half way through accutane treatment which prob would work and last..

Pros:

Improved my acne within weeks & prevents cystic acne

Cons:

Yeast infections, poor circulation & sun sensitivity.

I have been taking this anti-biotic for over a year now and it has worked well. But recently I have noticed alot more frequent break-outs and I feel like its not working as well anymore. I dont know what to do next...My doctor tells me birth control? Any advice?

Pros:

Cleared up acne the first time.

Cons:

The second time I took it, several years later, it made me incredible itchy and I developed welts all over.

Reading through these replies, I realize that I'm not the only one with this sort of reaction. Like the person from Canada, my allergy didn't develop until the second time I went on it. The first time I took it for facial acne and it worked, although it took about 6 months to my recollection. But the acne didn't come back and my face is clear to this day. The second time I went back on it for back acne, about three years later, and it made me itchy, but ignored the symptoms, until they got so bad I couldn't stand it. I stopped taking it (about a month ago) and I'm still itchy! THE BOTTOM LINE: TRY IT OUT, BUT DON'T IGNORE ANY SYMPTOMS LIKE ITCHINESS. JUST STOP TAKING IT.

Pros:

it seem to help a little, but not much i have tried everything and nothing seems to work, so them helping me a bit is better than nothing ay al

Cons:

i burn in the sun really easily, also my skin is very senceitive even to water, when i get out of bath it can be quite pain full

its worth a try, i have only been onthem for 4weeks, and inside the booklet i got with them it says that you should be on them for at least 6 weeks. so who know give them a few more weeks and they might work a little more.

Pros:

None

Cons:

I had a very rare and extreme allergic reaction. Within just 2 weeks of taking this drug, I had extreme pain in all of my joints. I was unable to lift my arms or drive. Ended up in the ER. This was a very rare case, but I thought I should share :)

I stopped taking it pretty quickly. For obvious reasons.

Pros:

Not on it long enough to get any benefits.

Cons:

headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea

I couldn't take this. I was on 200mg a day, and on day 3 I had to stop because I couldn't even turn my head without feeling woozy. I felt this constant pressure in my head, and I was so out of it and disoriented. I also didn't sleep well. Very strange, if short, experience.

Pros:

Began to work after about 1 month. I had tried many different medications, oral, topical and birth control- this seems to be the only one that works. I experienced acne only in college and did not have skin issues in high school.

Cons:

Sun sensitivity; I'm already fair, so I have to be careful.

Acne treatments work differently depending on the person. Obviously, it caused problems for some and worked wonders for others. I have only positive things to say about the medication and believe it's worth a try.

Pros:

Helps keep the "big" pimples away.

Cons:

i still break out every couple of weeks.
i can't tan!

it's an alright product. i'm still on it right now, but i have never had really bad acne. i just break out a lot, then those pimples go away and my face will be clear for a couple of weeks, then i'll break out again. it's hasn't really done wonders for me...

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
