Pros:

did clear up some spots and my skin seemed less greasy

Cons:

dont know if it was the minocycline or not but i got skin discolouration on the back of my neck but it wasnt terribeley noticeable

if it hadnt been for the discolouration i would have continued using it as i think with longer use it could have worked quite well as it cleared up some larger spots

Pros:

Did nothing bad.

Cons:

Did nothing good, either. Felt like taking sugar pills--I didn't have any side effects but I also didn't see any difference in my skin at all. That was a pretty big disappointment.

Other people seem to have miraculous results, but Minocycline did absolutely nothing for me!

Pros:

The first three months it did appear to clear the acne around my jawline.

Cons:

After maybe four months, however, it's potency seemed to wear off and breakouts became bad again.
I didn't suffer any side-effects that I'm aware of.

It is somewhat effective, and I'm sure for some people it could work quite well.

Pros:

Cleared my skin, few pimples but not as bad as before

Cons:

I got a yeast infection, but got information online and bought monistat in the pharmacy, and in less then a week i was back to normal again.

I only used mino for a month, but stopped because didnt want to stay for too long. then months later pimples would come, so i decided to get birth control pills, which made me breakout terribly and got very depressed, so stopped those pills after 3 weeks, and going back to mino, for a month or two, then i'll try to use just topical creams and facials every three weeks, i'm trying to change my diet too......maybe i'm allergic to something

Pros:

The acne on my back has improved SIGNIFICANTLY...my face has gotten better, just a few scars.

Cons:

Yeast infection. It's painful. But monistat combo pack makes that clear within 24 hours.

For the acne on my body, it worked very well. Not as well as my face, but it's worked and it's really helped me overall.

Pros:

Cleared up acne within one week

Cons:

Major, Major side effects...fever, muscle and joint aches, headaches, neck pain, dizzy, lightheadedness, and a rash. I was homebound for 7 days...on the couch, felt as it I had a horrible flu virus!!!

worked great, but not worth the side effects...stopped taking it after 7 days, it then took 7 days to feel better...started taking it again, took one 100mg dose and began having side effects just as bad as taking it the first time for seven days...didn't know the first reaction was from the minocycline, I thought I had a virus the doc said...doctors say it wasn't the med, but it had to have been...felt fine before taking it.

Pros:

I don't feel nausious, (I drank a lot of water with it) and no headaches. I've only been on it for a day, so I'll see what happens. My skin isn't drying out.

Cons:

None so far.

I'm just going to see how it works. I've read a lot and people said it works, but I'm also using other topical medications with it, so maybe it will work a little differently.

Pros:

Worked for a few weeks. The acne came back after a month or so, but not as severe as before.

Cons:

I didn't get any significant side effect... other than occasional nausea and appetite loss.

I've tried EVERYTHING... but still looking.

Pros:

It generally cleared up my facial acne.

Cons:

My crouchal region and penis developed a painfull rash which has caused it to scar quite severly. It is quite embarrasing and it has made me very affraid to talk to women.

Although it helped with my acne, the hyperpigmentation and scaring on my penis is a long term side affect, and it has not cleared up after more than a year, which has me quite worried.

Pros:

it did work well on my moderate to severe acne. Now I'm mostly clear. the pores are still big, it just worked on the cystic and pimple/whitehead acne.

Cons:

I think it caused my extreme facial redness and sun sensitivity on my face (I looked like I was sunburned all the time) and then it also caused semi-permanent but faint blue areas on my shins, which look somewhat like bruises.

I had used this for about 5 years straight, and I was methodically taking this, even past when my acne was bad because I was afraid it would come back. About a week ago I read an article detailing the possible side effects of long term use which included, among other alarming things, blue discolorations on your teeth and skin and basically your entire body. As I had blue discolorations, I immediately stopped taking minocycline and called my dermatologist. I'm hoping that the facial redness which I believe was caused by minocycline will disappear within the next year. In this past week of NOT taking minocycline my skin hasn't broken out really, I just got a little more acne and one cyst under my skin which only lasted about a day. so I'm glad I'm off minocycline Bottom line: take it for a couple years if you have no side affects and it's clearing your acne, and then get off it. so I'd recommend it so long as you look for any possible and dangerous side affects!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
