Pros:

- No side effects?

Cons:

- No improvement after one and a half months

I was switched to generic minocycline after my insurance would not cover Solodyn (extended release mino). Solodyn, while I took the samples, was a miracle drug. Minocycline has had none of the same effects -- I've been taking it for a month and a half. There is no difference in the persistence or size of my acne. I have not experienced any bad side effects, though. Nothing's changed. But I'm scared that once I just stop taking it, my acne will only get worse.

Pros:

skin cleared up

Cons:

Came back when off the medication

remember that this is prescription and it will come back when not used. However when on it, my skin cleared up for the most part.

Pros:

Works!
No side effects so far...

Cons:

Nothing (except for bad taste)

I have been using this for a couple of months now, and it has helped my acne TONS! I have it on my face and back, and a little on my chest. I take one pill in the morning with a glass of water. I use it along with some other prescription things, and it's been a big help. The only thing bad is the taste but that's just me :p

Pros:

None that I experienced.

Cons:

Did not improve my rosacea prone skin at all. Couldn't take dairy for a couple of hours before and after the pills. Was on it for just under 3 months when I started getting intense constant pressure headache that lasted over a week. Was highly concerned it was intracranial hypertension and went to gp in a panic. Was told to come off it and the headache stopped.

Dermatologists are not holistic and only know how to prescribe drugs. My derm upped my daily dosage by 50mg when it didn't work. He was convinced I'd need to be on antibiotics for the rest of my life and that was ok. I followed the instructions correctly and drank lots of water but it didn't work for me. In fact my skin got better when I came off it and started using aloe vera gel, the Thursday Island brand. Amazing results and I mix it with oil free Nutragena for sensitive skin. I also went on Herbalife, the ultimate program, which has an aloe vera tonic, and my skin is clear and glowing - so happy! I am now starting to think that the right nutrients are key. Taking antibiotics is not sustainable in the long term, going natural is the way for me! Good luck everyone, it's a stressful journey to find what works for you.

Pros:

Cleared up skin for the most part, but... TRY VITAMIN D FIRST!

Cons:

Acne returned upon discontinued use
Dizziness and an odd detached from self sort of feeling (only lasted for the first week or two)

While I was happy with the fact that it cleared up my skin, I found a much better regime that is natural, safer, and seems to get to the root of the problem: TRY VITAMIN D!!! I have been taking 4,000 IU daily as well as using a Clairsonic exfoliator twice daily and it has been the best thing I have tried yet. I get very little sun where I live which means I get very little vitamin D, and I believe this to be the cause of my acne. I now get very few pimples now and then that last only a day or two. Upon a little research, it seems that many have found this same thing to work for their skin, so I would strongly recommend you try this before resorting to harsh antibiotics that have severe side effects. Also, it is much much cheaper; about $6.00 for a bottle that will last you months. I say, always try the natural method first! I am a strong believer that there is a natural remedy for most anything, and have little trust in the big drug companies and am suspicious that they collude for 'business'.

Pros:

-Helped the underground pimples I had along my jaw line
-Easy to take
-Overall complextion began to look better

Cons:

-Developed rash after a month!
-Light dizziness
-You have to avoid the sun
-Take twice a day

I really thought this was going to be it for me and finally finding something to help my acne situation. Unfortunately, I developed a rash-type thing on the back of my hands and up my arms about after a month of use. It just came up out of no where, it was pretty werid. So ofcourse I stopped and it went away after a week. My dermatologist now has me on Clindamycin and Amoxicillin? I was pretty bummed when I had to yet again switch up my treatment....

Pros:

Worked brilliant
Clears skin

Cons:

Almost killed me!
Have to have regular blood tests!

Gave me autoimmune liver disease! or made it worse anyway, don't let that put you off though, it depends on the person that probably wont happen to you, it did clear my skin however try and use a less powerful antibiotic to start with, if you do go on this make sure to keep having blood tests!

Pros:

Keeps my skin somewhat clear
Doesnt Bother my stomach

Cons:

DIZZINESS!
LIGHTHEADED!

I was using doxycycline with 2 creams and that cleared my skin up drastically but not those little bumps all over my cheeks and forehead but got rid of cystic- my dr said try this to see if it clears it all up. The doxy made me throw up and this does not bother my stomach however I get severly lightheaded and dizzy and totally out of it. I have more pimples now than when I was using the doxy and I would rather have stomach aches then deal with these side effects. Overall Im trying whatever my dr tells me until I find what works.

Pros:

Works fast
easy to manage
effective

Cons:

minor headaches

My doctor prescribed this to me a couple weeks ago. She said that it takes 2 weeks for me to see improvements, however I already see my face clearing up. It is awesome because no pimples are popping. Usually I would get a pimple every week, but ever since I was taking this medication these pimple occurrences has not been happening. I definitely recommend this to others. The other con is that I got a lot of headaches, but other that than its great.

Pros:

Did clear up my skin somewhat
Less expensive than other prescriptions

Cons:

Required progressively higher doses to work
Caused a vaginal yeast infection (my first ever)
Not safe if you become pregnant!!!

Not a long-term solution, since the dose kept needing to be increased and indefinite high doses of antibiotics are incredibly unhealthy. I quit after some months because I started getting yeast infections (yuck!) and digestive side effects (nausea, etc). Also didn't ever clear up my skin completely. Not worth the risks in my book!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
