Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

The first three months it did appear to clear the acne around my jawline.

Cons:

After maybe four months, however, it's potency seemed to wear off and breakouts became bad again.
I didn't suffer any side-effects that I'm aware of.

It is somewhat effective, and I'm sure for some people it could work quite well.

Pros:

Taking 100 mg a day seems to be working since day one been about to weeks.

Cons:

acne not completely cleared up, still get breakouts but helps alot.

after u run out?

doc prescribed this with benzyol peroxide 5% and it seems to be working well. I hardly get new pimples now and my old ones are going away, I just hope it stays that way after I run out. Drink plenty of water or you'll get a headache and i would also recommend eating yogurt to keep the good bacteria in your stomach healthy to avoid appetite problems

Pros:

It initially worked well to clear up my minor acne and reduced the redness of rosacea. It was inexpensive using my insurance ($20 copay).

Cons:

Caused TERRIBLE pains in my knees, hips, fingers, and shoulders. Lost effectiveness after 2 mos. It also made me sweat very easily and I developed a dry cough when I used it, which stopped immediately upon discontinuing the med.

I took minocin for 6 months regularly but I stopped taking the medication because of the serious joint and muscle pains it caused. I've takne other antibiotics for acne before and have never had this sort of reaction, so this was scary. Others may have positive experiences with it, but for me the joint pains and other strange side effects were not worth the moderate job it did at clearing up my acne.

Pros:

This is a treatment for moderate acne that really works. Took it for 2 yrs haven't used it for 1 yr and i'm still acne free.

Cons:

Small rash on back of neck and back of legs.

Worth the money and worth the minor rashes. Insurance paid for this.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne better than doxycycline within two weeks ( 200mg a day). My face is smoother than it has been in years.

Cons:

Unfortunately I may have to stop taking this medication. I have had constant headaches that started about a week after I started this medicine ( I've been on it for about a month now) I also had a yeast infection week 2

This product works great. Try it for a week. If you can deal with the side effects, then stick with it. If not, find something else. Do not put your health at risk for clear skin.

Pros:

it seem to help a little, but not much i have tried everything and nothing seems to work, so them helping me a bit is better than nothing ay al

Cons:

i burn in the sun really easily, also my skin is very senceitive even to water, when i get out of bath it can be quite pain full

its worth a try, i have only been onthem for 4weeks, and inside the booklet i got with them it says that you should be on them for at least 6 weeks. so who know give them a few more weeks and they might work a little more.

Pros:

I guess it worked...

Got TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE upper-abdominal pressure... had a CAT scan before I figured out it was the Solodyn....FYI

Bad Reaction

Pros:

Works moderately well with clearing skin

Cons:

long term use leads to extreme suseptability to thrush (candidas infection)

have been using for over a year. DoOesn't work perfectly on acne, still get one or two pimples a week, but those clear much faster with minocycline. Also prevents cystic acne. When went off for a few weeks noticed a worsening in acne but an improvment in mental state. so would agree that the minocycline can effect you mentally or cause mild depression. ALso, as with any antibiotic, the extended use leads to an over growth of candidas, causing thrush.

Pros:

MY acne was cleared up completely within a week an a half. The anti inflammatory effect was helpful as well.

Cons:

For the first three days I suffered from ligh headedness, loss of concentration and headache. Nothing too serious, and it all stopped after about 3 days.

Worked like a charm.

Pros:

I developed cystic acne as part of some premenopausal symptoms. Doctor put me on this immediately, and it worked fast. I've been on it for months now.

Cons:

Almost immediately, I developed a yeast infection. This happens to me when I go on any antibiotic, as it does to many women. Fluconazole cleared it right up, and my doctor now keeps a standing prescription for me in case I need it again.

It's still working for me!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
